Technique: Crochet, jump rings, shaping

Materials

  • 22-gauge round dead soft wire, 7 feet; it's recommended that you work directly off the spool or coil of wire
  • 22-gauge square copper wire, 14"
  • 2mm ID jump rings, 20
  • 5mm chain
  • 8 headpins (or make your own from 22-gauge round wire)
  • 2 ear wires

Tools

With all that myself and my family have gone through, we have formed like this circle; and with my friends of hope, we always have hope and we choose never to give up and we support one another and encourage each other through our art and our love. This is why I called these earrings the Circle of Hope.

Instructions

  1. Take your 7 feet of 22-gauge round wire and your crochet hook. Make a loop with the wire and put your crochet hook through the center of the loop. Then wrap the wire around your hook and pull it through the hole like in the picture.

Make sure you pull the wire up with your hook to make your next stitch, and then repeat: wrap the wire around the hook and pull it through the hole, until you have crocheted 9 stitches. Then pull the wire all the way through the hole and bring it back through the hole tight, then trim. Do the same at the beginning of the chain: bring your wire tail through the hole tight, and trim. Repeat this step for the matching earring.

  2. Cut a 7" piece of square copper wire. Weave the square wire in and out of the crocheted segment like in the picture. Make sure that both end are even. Repeat for the second earring.

  3. Take your round nose pliers and make a bend in the square wire at the end of the crocheted segment. Grasp this bend with flat nose pliers and wrap the wire end around the loop. Wrap this wire onto the end of the crocheted segment. Then take your round nose pliers and make a little loop around your round nose plier tips for a decoration, and bend it up on your wrap like the picture. Repeat for the second earring.

  4. Now at the other end of the crocheted segment, place these beads on the square wire: 1 bicone, 1 copper Bali bead, 1 bicone.

Gently form the segment around the spool or other round shaping object. Circle of Hope Earrings
Then, twist the end of the wire with a pin vise (grasping the wire after the beads with flat or chain nose pliers). Spiral this twisted wire end up to the base of the bicone to finish the end. Repeat these steps on the second earring.

  5. Open your 20 jump rings and put them to the side.
Cut your chain into the following segments: 9 links, 3 links, 5 links, 6 links. Do this twice, once for each earring, so you will have 2 segments of each chain length.
Add an open jump ring to the end of each segment.

  6. Attach the jump ring from the end of a 9-link segment to the 2nd crochet loop made. Attach an open jump ring to the 2nd chain link and the 3rd crochet loop.
Now attach a jump ring to the 4th chain link and the 5th crochet loop.

Take another jump ring and attach it to the 5th crochet loop and the last link of the 3-link chain. On the 6th crochet loop, attach a jump ring to the 5-link chain. Finally, attach the 6-link chain to the 7th crochet loop with a jump ring.
Beginning with a 4-link chain, open a jump ring, place it through an end chain link and the jump ring of an outer wire of the wire bundle. Close the link. Continue in this manner in the following pattern: 4-5-6-7-7-6-5-4. Now each wire end loop should have a jump ring connecting the loop pair, and this jump ring should hold another jump ring, and this jump ring should hold a length of chain.

  7. Now it's time for your 8 headpins. Place a bead on a headpin and create a wrapped loop, then repeat so you have 8 bead headpin charms. Attach each headpin charm to one of the 8 hanging chains with a single jump ring.
