wirejewelry's Tip #6 for a Successful 2009!

You’ve made it! We’ve spent the last few weeks going over some very simple, yet powerful tips that can help you and your business to reach and even exceed your expectations for 2009. I hope that you have already been able to incorporate some of these valuable tips and have seen some real results as a consequence.

As promised in my last email, we’re going to spend some time today reviewing some ways to put your website to work for you. We’ve already established that a website is very effective tools that can help you market on a nationwide scale and even throughout other parts of the world. Websites these days are very cheap to get up and running and you incur little ongoing costs for the website once it’s up and running.

So, once you have your site up and running, how can you put it to use? If you build a website and do absolutely nothing to it as far as a marketing aspect goes, it will sit there much like an unknown brick and mortar store….no traffic coming to it….no sales…..no profit.

There are a few fundamental principles that should be followed anytime you set up a website. By abiding by these principles, you’ll be able to realize an incredible amount of sales.

The #1 way to get people to your website (speaking about new business specifically) is to be listed high enough up in the search engine results that people are able to find your link and click into your website. Okay – now time for a test. Go ahead and open up another webpage and type in www.google.com in your address bar. Once that comes up, type in the word wire pendants in the search bar. You’ll see 10 company names come up in the search results in the center of your page. The first one that came up when I typed in wire pendants was www.wirejewelry-pendants.com .

Can you imagine if that was your company name at the top of the page? Did you know that there are over 2 million searches for pendants every single month on Google? Yes, that’s right, over 2 million searches! That is averaged out over the past year. Last month alone there were over 3.3 million searches.

Now, imagine your name being at the top of a page that is being searched for millions of times per month, how many sales would that result in? My guess would be A LOT!

So how do you get your website to come up in the search results and eventually show up in the top 1-3 places for a search word? I’m going to speak in very basic terms here in this email, but I would recommend going to some professional web developers/ Search Engine Optimization professionals to get some more detailed information.

1 - Basic Search Engine Optimization - Search engines gather information from every site in the world every month or so. When they do this they are looking for a few key pieces of information. One of these key items is called your Meta information. Meta information includes keywords that are relevant to a specific page on your website, the title of the page, and a brief description describing what the page is speaking about. So, for example, let’s say that you have one page on your website dedicated to wire-sculpted rings. You would have keywords like wire rings, wire sculpted rings, wire-sculpted rings, etc. The title and description of the page would include these keywords because those are the keywords that describe that particular page.

2 - On Page Optimization – Okay, so on your wire sculpted ring page you’ll have photos of many of your unique rings right? You’ll also have some text on your page describing your products, maybe the process by which they were created and some general information regarding wire sculpted rings. Would you talk about peanut butter sandwiches on the same page as your rings?? Of course not! If you have a page focused on rings, talk about rings and rings only. The search engines are going to come in and make sure that what you’re trying to sale is relevant to the information that you list on the page. The more specific you can be, the better the results will be for your search engine ranking.

3 - Link backs to your site – The search engines are in the business of supplying relevant information to those that are searching for things. If I go to Google and search for basketball shoes and sites come up that are selling hardwood floors, am I going to come back to search on their site again? Probably not. They want to make sure that relevant information is in front of the person searching for specific keywords. One way they do that is based on popularity. That’s right! You thought popularity went out the window after high-school, but here we are talking about it again!

The search engines figure that if you have a lot of “friends” that are referring people to your site, then you probably have a pretty good product. A good way to do this is to have other sites have links on their websites that direct people back to yours. There are a variety of ways to go about doing this, but the most effective way is just to ask, most people are willing to let you put a link on their website if you’ll put their link on yours. Pretty fair deal!

There are other factors that go into “ranking” in the search engines, but these are the basics. The bottom line is, if you can do a great job upfront building your website and marketing it correctly, you’ll be rewarded for a long time to come!

By doing some of these basic things correctly, you’ll be able to get your website into the top results of the search engines. There are millions of people constantly searching for different items on the internet at any given time. If you can capture just a small percentage of that how big would you be able to grow your business? I’d venture to say that you could build it as large as you had a desire to.
