Weaving Long Lengths of Wire

by Sarah Thompson
When you're working with long weaving wires-especially in symmetrical designs or when wrapping around curves-it can be tough to keep your wires neat and tangle-free. Today's quick tip from wire weaving expert Sarah Thompson can save you time, frustration, and even wire!
Instructions
Try weaving from the center out
Weaving from the center out is especially useful when:

  • You're weaving with long lengths of wire

  • You want to maintain symmetry

  • You're wrapping around curved or irregular base wires
  • Here's How it Works
    This is done by:

  • Measure out the full length of weaving wire you'll need for the entire section.

  • Fold the wire in half and find the center.

  • Start weaving from that center point, using one side of the wire.

  • Secure the other end-this becomes your tail and will be used later.

  • Once you finish the first half of your design, flip your piece over and weave the second half with the remaining wire.

This approach keeps your wires shorter while you work, which means less tangling and better control, especially in tighter spaces or when working on both sides of a mirrored pattern.
Pro Tip: Use kumihimo bobbins to keep both ends of your weaving wire organized. They help prevent tangles and make it much easier to manage multiple working wires at once.
