Using a Ball Vise
by Kylie Jones
A ball vise is a great tool and I love using it. It can hold your work at many different angles so you can find the best way to approach what you are doing. It frees your hands from needing to hold onto pieces. The top of the vise can spin 360 degrees which makes filing circular objects a breeze. Yes, I love it. My model is a cheaper non-branded one and I'm sure the branded ones would be even more fabulous.
Instructions
What it can do
Hold pieces. There are a range of attachments that slot into the holes to hold different sized bits and pieces. It can hold wires together for wrapping, coils to cut jump rings, metal to be filed or polished and pieces for stone setting. With some pieces I also use a strip of leather to prevent marring and give a better grip.

Rotate 360 degrees around which means you can evenly file circular objects and look around your whole piece easily. This function is also very good for checking if stones or tubes are level. This rotation of the top of the ball also has a brake which can change how easily it moves.

Rotate more than 180 degrees on the supplied platform from the front to the back and also from side to side, which makes finding the perfect position to work on a piece quick and easy.
What it can't do
There is no included function to stop the rotation of the ball on the platform. So you can't work completely with both hands if you are hammering. Placing a piece of leather or towel between the platform and the ball can help with this.

The vise can't be secured to the bench so stretching long pieces of wire or other tasks that need an immovable vise can't be done with this ball vise.
