Storing Dapping Blocks and Punches
Here's how I store and protect my metal dapping punches from dirt and rust

When shaping metal with a dapping block and punches, it helps to keep your most-used tools and materials in one place.
Since I work in my laundry room, humidity can be an issue. I clean and oil my hammers and pliers to prevent rust, but the daps and blocks don't get enough use to need the same maintenance.
I store them in a tightly sealed clear shoebox and have not had any problems with rust.
What used to be a hassle was hunting down felt and leather pieces whenever I wanted to use the metal block without damaging the surface.
Now I keep strips of felt and leather in the same box.
They take up almost no space and have completely eliminated the frustration of searching for supplies.

When dapping textured pieces with the texture side down in a dapping block well, a wooden block works well.
However, sometimes the well size you need isn't available on the wooden block.
In that case, use the metal block and place a piece of thick felt or thin leather in the well.
Cut the material into a circle that fits the well to avoid bunching or pleating around the edges, which can distort larger pieces.
No more bunching when the material fits snugly inside the well.
If you need a "handle" on the felt or leather to help with positioning, cut it into a teardrop shape. This keeps edges smooth and prevents distortion.
