Sterling Silver and Fresh Water Pearls

by Dale Armstrong
Question:

I want to use some fresh water pearls with sterling silver. Will the aging of the silver damage the pearls?
Instructions
Answer:

No, silver tarnish will not harm freshwater pearls.

However, over time, sterling silver will tarnish, and cleaning it requires care to avoid damaging the pearls.

Gentle cleaning methods include:

Using an ionic cleaner like the Speed Brite

A baking soda, aluminum foil, and hot water bath

A silver polishing cloth

Never use toothpaste its abrasives can scratch the silver and damage the pearl's nacre.

Consider upgrading to Argentium silver for longer intervals between cleanings.
