Starting a Saw Cut

by Kylie Jones
When you start a saw cut the blade can slide along your metal rather than biting into the line you intended to saw. Here's a tip for making it easy to start a saw cut.
Instructions
The front of the saw blade has the points of tiny teeth, so there isn't much metal biting into the cut.

Using an upstroke from the front makes cutting easier because the slanted side of the teeth contacts the metal, reducing the chance of slipping.

Even better, turn your saw blade slightly to the side (30-45 degrees) to use the thicker part of the blade to make a small nick. This nick guides the blade and prevents sliding.

After making the nick, straighten the blade and continue sawing. The nick can be cut on the up or down stroke.

If you don't have strong control, cutting the nick on the upstroke is easier since it offers less resistance.
