Starting Out with Wirework - Taking Care of Your Eyes
I was a long holdout for doing any type of seed bead work, main reason was every beader I knew eventually went blind from those darn tiny seed beads. They wore 3 types of glasses (at the same time) and NEVER had enough light. Well, after years of fighting the evil seed bead urge, I finally caved and of course fell in love. Now, years later, thanks to the aging process, I have joined the masses in more lighting and magnification whenever possible!
Instructions
No matter what type of jewelry making you do, lighting and proper vision are keys to professional jewelry results. Often overlooked because let's face it, lights and magnifiers aren't nearly as exciting as brand new wire or sheet metal, seeing clearly is beyond important. The most common complaint about jewelry from my fave gallery is jewelry coming apart. The clasps, jump rings and links aren't completely closed up tightly. Usually it's not seen by the naked eye but over time wearing the piece, something comes apart. Especially if jump rings aren't tightly closed.
So, be sure to double check your closures so there are no gaps, trim your ends and file them smooth. Wearing the correct eyewear (bifocals or magnifiers) allows you to double check your closures so there are no gaps. Glasses also help protect your eyes from flying bits of wire. And... let there be light! You can never have too much light, but you sure can have too little! It gets even trickier to see when you're traveling or attending a workshop. Who knows what the lighting will be like and how many mistakes you'll end up with! Throw a portable lamp and magnifier into your bag for the road and you'll be set!
