Setting Up Metal Sandpaper Holders
by Kylie Jones
These sandpaper holders are really neat tools. They have an outside shape either round or square that you wrap sandpaper around and they have an inner rod that holds the sandpaper firmly in place. They are sturdy and provide a hard backing and have a feel very similar to using a small file. You can use up odd shaped and partly used sandpaper. Setting them up is quick and easy.
Instructions
The downside to these tools is that you have a lot of the paper only being used to hold it in place and unless you have another use for these bits you will have a bit of waste.

You can use sandpaper or polishing papers. The polishing papers have a feel more like material and tend to grip the holder a little tighter than the plain sandpaper.

To set up the flat square shaped holder I measure the outside shape and multiply by 2 to get the width to cut the sandpaper. If the sandpaper is to be held tight you need to have enough paper on the inside for the rod to hold it in place but not too much so that the rod can't fit inside the inner channel. I place the outside of the holder in the middle of the sandpaper piece and score down both sides with a scribe, this gives the folds a crisp edge. You don't need to use paper that is the whole length of the sandpaper space, shorter pieces can work well too.

To setup the round holder measure the outside round edge and add the measurement of the 3 inner sides. You can get away with a bit more or less but only a bit. The first time I do this for a tool I write the measurement down so I don't have to do it again. You can also just guess how much you need and see how you go.
