Scrap Wire Twisted Rings

by Judy Larson
You can use scrap wire to make twisted jump rings, or larger rings. These can be used in lots of ways in other designs.
Instructions
Hanging a bead inside a twisted wire hoop can kick a design up a notch.

Twisted wire rings can also become a base or a frame in a design.

I keep twisted wire lengths on hand because it quite often finds its way into my designs. That means there are always going to be short pieces, usually 2" or less long, left over. I file and match the ends before soldering them together for possible use in a later project. If you do this, make sure that the rings are stored in bags labeled with the twisted wire gauge used to make them.

Two rings made with scraps very seldom end up the same size. However, since they are made from two wires twisted together, they are easy to stretch out a bit.

Place the larger of the two on a bezel, ring, or hoop mandrel (used here). Use an ultra fine point Sharpie to draw a line on the mandrel just below the twisted wire ring. Remove the ring and replace it with the smaller one. Sometimes all that is needed to stretch it out a bit is pushing the ring down mandrel with your fingers. A rawhide mallet can also be used to help stretch the ring out a bit. Be careful when tapping the twisted wire ring, though. It stretches VERY quickly.
