Saws and Turning Radius

by Judy Larson
When designing something that will be cut out with a saw, it is important to keep in mind the size of the design in relation to the depth of the saw frame that will be used.
Instructions
Even if the design's width fits the saw frame, the corner-to-corner distance of the sheet metal matters.

If this distance is greater than the frame's depth, turning the metal while sawing will be nearly impossible and blades may break.

This saw frame has a 3" depth from blade to back edge, which barely fits this design's metal sheet.

Since the sheet's corner-to-corner distance exceeds the frame's depth, switching to a deeper frame is necessary.

Even with a 6" depth saw frame, cutting these larger sheets will be difficult.

Always measure the greatest distance you need to accommodate when choosing a frame.

Still, it's easier to cut the pieces apart with shears first, then flatten them before sawing.
