That's such solid advice! Chain maille really thrives on experimentation and personal touch. Starting with the gauge recommended by the pattern helps you understand the structure and flow of the weave, then tweaking ring sizes afterward lets you customize the texture, weight, and drape.

It's fascinating how the same weave like Full Persian can look so different in 18-gauge (chunkier, more substantial) versus 22-gauge (delicate, lacy). Trying out different gauges also helps develop your eye and feel for how the rings behave during weaving.
