Metal Content Stamping

by Judy Larson
It is a good idea to stamp the metal content on a gifted precious metal piece so years from now the person that it is passed down to it will know what the piece is made of.
Instructions
Stamping metal on a bench block telescopes the stamped image from the stamped side of the metal to the other side. This leaves a raised area that will almost always be visible, even after flattening with a rubber/nylon mallet, no matter how much sanding and polishing is done. Of course, texturing after the metal content is stamped can help conceal the bump. For many jewelry pieces, the telescoped image/bump is not a problem because it will be covered with a stone or other metal parts.

After roller printing and cutting these pieces out, the metal content was stamped on the back of each piece. If a metal bench block was used, the roller printed image would have been obliterated in that area on the front. The solution was to place the pieces on a rubber block and then stamp the metal content, being careful to not hammer the stamp too hard. The rubber block allowed the textured side to be cushioned enough that the texture was not disturbed during stamping. The slight raised area on the front was easily flattened by placing the pieces on a metal bench block and hammering with a rubber/plastic mallet.

But what if a rubber block is not available? Place several layers of plastic, such as the plastic removed from inside processed meat packages (which is also perfect to make templates) on a bench block and use as you would a rubber block. Other alternatives to the rubber block would be using a thin magazine/catalog or newspaper pages on a bench block.
