Make a Quick End Cone

by Abby Hook
A useful component for hiding multi strand ends, this project teaches you precision placement of wire, since it is very important that there are no spaces between the wire coils as this would compromise the strength and rigidity of the cone.
Instructions
Prepare Your Pliers
The wire cone is shaped by coiling around your round nose pliers. The grip you have on your pliers is very important, too loose and the wire will keep turning on itself, resulting in you getting nowhere fast. Too tight and you will mark the wire, leaving little divots in the finished cone, making it unattractive.
If you struggle to maintain the right grip there is a little trick you can try. Stick a couple of small pieces of masking tape around 1 jaw of your round nose pliers. Take great care that the tape is smooth and well stuck down on the inside of the jaw – to avoid making the situation worse!

Begin to form the cone
Cut a piece of 20 gauge wire 12” long. Straighten the wire (see simple earwires).
Form a loop around the very tip of the pliers, by grasping the end of the wire and bending it around the pliers jaw without the tape.
Keep the wire at a 90° angle to the pliers at all times.

Continue coiling
Carefully coil around the jaws of the pliers, repositioning the pliers after every turn.
Continue until you come to the end of the wire.

Pro Tip: Bend the wire around the pliers rather than turning the pliers. This will reduce the pressure you put on the wire with the pliers and thus eliminating marks, it is also better for your hands and wrists!

Final step
Remove the cone from the pliers.
Snip the top and bottom loop off (as these will not be perfectly shaped) by holding the wire cutters at an angle as shown.
Make sure the wire ends are in line with each other so that the cone is straight.
Tuck the ends in slightly with the chain nose pliers.
Don’t forget to remove the tape from your pliers and make sure any the sticky residue is removed.
