Just like wire gauges, file numbers follow a simple pattern. The larger the number, the finer the file. The lower the number, the coarser it is.
Files generally range from 00 to 6. A #00 is the coarsest, while a #6 is the finest.
For general use, #2 or #4 files are a good medium choice.
Files only cut in one direction never file back and forth.
Push the file away from you to cut. Then lift it off the metal before bringing it back to repeat the motion.
