How to Win Awards for Jewelry Design

by Dale Armstrong
Question:

This isn't about wire, but about doing shows. We participate in many shows that give awards for Best in Show, 3-Dimensional Art Wearable, and etc. What exactly are these judges looking for? How do we prepare to compete for these Awards...or is there a way to compete? Sometimes the award is free entrance into that show the following year. Sometimes it is very substantial depending on the show and would be worth knowing how to prepare for this.

Answer:

I totally get your frustration show judging can feel so unpredictable! Unfortunately, there's no one-size-fits-all fix since each show has its own vibe and judges with their own tastes (sometimes politics plays a role too).

First, check the award criteria carefully. If it's not clear, don't hesitate to call the promoter and ask how they'd prefer entries displayed, whether there's a special form for judges, or if any particular labeling is needed.

When I enter contests without a designated display area, I put my piece in a separate display box with great lighting, positioned at the front of my booth. I choose a background color that makes the piece pop, and I add a simple card explaining the materials, the process, and the piece's name. For something unique like a headpiece I also include a nice photo of it being worn to show it in action.

If you don't win, take time to look at the winners, congratulate them, and even ask how they presented their work or what they think gave them the edge.

Most importantly don't stop entering contests! They really push your creativity and sharpen your skills. Good luck next time!
