Creating a Standing Workspace

by Kylie Jones
I have been using a standing desk for my computer work for a number of years after reading about the negative health effects of prolonged sitting. So the next step was to convert my jewelry making space also into a standing work space.
Instructions
It is pretty easy to do, you can even buy electronically powered adjustable height jewelry benches but I have just used an old coffee table to raise the height of my space. As an added bonus it adds extra space to hold all of the bits and pieces. It is very sturdy with a bottom shelf that adds structure so it can be hammered on, and it is easy to stow away underneath the work bench.

Standing does make some tasks more difficult because your body isn't being braced by the chair but over time I have found I now enjoy standing and dislike feeling all crunched up when I sit. Some tasks such as using the foot pedal on the flex shaft or micro motor do feel strange and require a few changes, for this I put a block of wood in front of the pedal so I am more balanced and have more control of my weight on the pedal.
