Closing Stainless Steel Jump Rings

by Kylie Jones
When stainless steel coils are cut to make jump rings the blade leaves a bur still attached to the cut ends of the rings. This bur needs to be removed so the jump ring ends close tightly together. If the bur is left the jump rings will have a rough finish that will catch on clothes and make the bracelet feel scratchy rather than smooth. The burs can also catch on other rings making the patterns in your chain maille look uneven. The burs aren't so obvious until you look under magnification but you can easily feel them.
Instructions
The easiest way to remove burs is to tumble the rings in a tumbler.

Save time by threading the rings onto thick wire so they stay together during the tumbling process.

Unfortunately, tumbling doesn't always remove all the burs. If any remain, you'll need to remove them manually.

I use pliers for this. I grip the end of the ring and rotate the pliers around it until the bur is gone.

This can be very time-consuming, especially if you're working on a necklace with over 300 rings.

Different jump ring sellers have different standards when it comes to finishing.

Some suppliers sell rings with the burs already removed.

While these may cost more, I find the higher quality is actually cheaper in the long run when I factor in the time saved.
