Aspect Ratio for Byzantine Weave

by Kylie Jones
Byzantine chain maille weave has an intricate, detailed pattern and the aspect ratio you chose for your design will alter how the pattern looks. It is amazing the variety of looks you can achieve with the same pattern using different sized rings.
Instructions
Aspect ratio is a chain maille term that describes the size of the ring as a relationship between the Inner diameter of the ring (ie the size of the mandrel on which it was wound) and the size of wire the ring is made with. For more information see my tool tip describing aspect ratio.
For byzantine weave you can see from the photographs how the 3.2 aspect ratio is very tight, there aren't any big spaces that separate the patterns. This tight weave is great for chains that have a heavy feel and compact look. This tight weave also helps the chain hold a form such as in my byzantine pendant where it is shaped into an angular teardrop.
As the aspect ratio number gets bigger so do the spaces between the patterns. The largest aspect ratio of 5 in the photos makes the pattern look like ancient symbols. This weave is too loose to hold the pattern for some jewelry items. It will work if it is hanging with some weight and could work on a bracelet if it was tight, so the pattern was stretched out and held in place.
