Another Way to Condition a Rawhide Mallet
by Judy Larson
I purchased a weighted rawhide mallet purchased a while back and put it on my desk top so I would remember to try to start the conditioning before the snow flew. Too late. So it sat there and sat there, taking up room and gathering dust. In my other tip on how to condition these tools, I used an outside curb. Here's an inside way!
Instructions
Every once in a while I get one of those "Duh, head slap, why did I not think of that before" moments. I was looking for something in one of the kitchen drawers and spotted my Mother's meat tenderizer mallet that I inherited when we cleaned out her house. I always use a larger one I purchased 40 or so years ago, so never used this one. It is PERFECT for conditioning the mallet head. Every once in a while, especially when some project is giving me a tough time, I start whacking away at one side or the other for a while and then set it aside. It won't be long before the mallet surface is broken in!
So, if you don't have a curb you can hammer on and/or are afraid little bits will get stuck in the leather during the process, this is for you!
