When Judy Larson wanted to bezel set stones but didn't have cabochons on hand, she turned to an unexpected source: inexpensive, softer beads. By splitting them into halves, she created unique earring designs without touching her high-value materials. Along the way, she found a smart way to save even the broken pieces for future projects.

Instructions
Step 1:
Choosing and Preparing Beads
I could never bring myself to destroy quality beads that have great value. But I have no problem using inexpensive, softer, low-grade beads that rank lower on the Mohs Hardness Scale.

The challenge is that half of these beads may not split cleanly enough to create a usable "half" for bezel setting.

Save all the waste pieces to crush for a later project.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Choosing and Preparing Beads, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Save all the waste to crush for a later project
Step 2:
Splitting Beads
A rubber block has too much bounce, so use a bench block when splitting beads. Set the bead on the block with the hole positioned perpendicular to the surface.

Place the tip of an awl in the hole on top of the bead. Hold the awl perpendicular to the bead and block, wrapping as many fingers as possible around the bead to contain fragments. Strike the top of the awl firmly with a heavy hammer.

This process takes practice.

Do not be timid with the strike.

However, striking too hard may cause the awl to slip on the block, creating a risk of injury.

The three stones shown in this step are rhodonite, coral, and lapis lazuli.

Step 3:
Fitting Bead Halves into a Bezel
As long as the bezel wire is wide enough to cover the edge of the broken half, the bead "cabochon" is usable.

It can still be used even if a small part of the side is missing, since the rounded shape of the bezel wire helps disguise the flaw.

Step 4:
Creating and Embellishing a Pendant
A clean, simple pendant can be made by bezel setting the stone and adding a hanging loop.

Step it up by using other supplies you already have on hand. For example, repurpose a ball chain with a broken clasp or one you no longer wear as an embellishment.

You can also melt scrap wire bits into decorative balls and attach them as accents.

For a designer touch, add decoration to the back of the pendant as well.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Creating and Embellishing a Pendant, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Decorate the back of the pendant for a designer touch.
Step 5:
Constructing Bezels for Bead Halves
Follow bezel-making directions to create bezels that fit each "half" bead cabochon. Since every bead half has a slightly different diameter, each bezel must be made individually.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Constructing Bezels for Bead Halves, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Follow bezel making directions
Step 6
Shape the bezel wire around the smallest barrel of large Wrap N Tap pliers. This makes forming the circle around the broken beads much easier.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, wrap n tap pliers makes forming the circle
Step 7
Aim for a moderately tight fit, but avoid pressing the bezel into broken areas at the base of the bead. The bezel should remain round.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, trying to achieve a tight fit
Step 8:
Adjusting Cabochon Height with Shims
The bead cabochons will not all be the same height. If any sit too low, raise them with shims.

In this example, several bead cabochons needed to be raised so they matched in height.

You may only need to do this for earrings, where uneven stone heights are much more noticeable.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Adjusting Cabochon Height with Shims, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, need to be raised to they are all similar in height
Step 9:
Making Uniform Hanging Loops from Jump Rings
For both the clean-lined earrings and the ball chain pendant, purchase or make 20-gauge 3mm ID jump rings (one for each pendant).

To cut jump rings into hanging loops of identical size, place a jump ring with the seam facing out in a miter jig and vise. Slide a long, straight sewing pin into the ring. Push the jump ring and pin against the vise, keeping the seam facing out, then tighten in place.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Making Uniform Hanging Loops from Jump Rings, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Purchase or make 20 gauge 3mm ID jump rings,
Step 10
Remove the pin. Cut away most of the jump ring that extends from the vise. File the ends smooth and flush with the face of the vise. Each finished loop will be exactly the same size.

Note: A T-pin is much thicker than a sewing pin. Using a T-pin will make the finished loop shallower, resulting in a ring too small for a bail but fine for an earring finding. In this case, scale up to a 4mm jump ring.

Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, filing down the ends of the cut jump ring
Step 11
Slightly flatten one side of each ring loop by running it over 320-grit sandpaper on a bench block with your finger.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Slightly flatten one side
Step 12:
Preparing and Attaching the Backplate
For a simple pendant with no embellishment, cut a ¾" x ¾" backplate from 24- or 26-gauge sheet. Cut two backplates if you are making earrings. For a ball chain-embellished pendant, cut a 7/8" x 7/8" square from 24-gauge sheet metal.

If you want a texture or design on the back of the pendant, now is the time to add it.

Place medium paste solder around the inside bottom edge of the bezel. Center the bezel on the backplate. Add a small amount of solder where the top of the pendant will be. Push the flat side of the prepared hanging loop into the solder, tight against the bezel edge.

Hint: When making multiples, number the back of each bead cabochon and scratch the same number inside the corresponding bezel on the backplate.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Preparing and Attaching the Backplate, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Place a small amount of medium paste solder
Step 13:
Soldering the Bezel and Loop Assembly
Place the assembly on a solder block. Heat until the solder flows, using a solder pick to push the hanging loop back against the bezel if it shifts while the flux bubbles.

Allow the assembly to cool completely before moving it.
Step 14:
Cleaning and Punching the Hanging Loop
Pickle the assembly, then neutralize it after removing it from the pickle if you are using Sparex. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

Use a 1.25mm hole punch to make a hole near the top edge of the hanging ring.

For a clean-lined simple pendant or earrings, continue to Step 29 after this step, and start at "Cut the assembly out".
Step 15:
Adding Ball Chain Embellishment
For a ball chain-embellished pendant, shape the chain around the bezel, starting and ending at the hanging loop.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Adding Ball Chain Embellishment, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Cut the 1.5mm ball chain one bead
Step 16
Cut a 1.5mm ball chain one bead too long (about 2-3/8" long). It is easy to shorten by pushing the balls together, but once cut, it cannot be lengthened.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, cutting the ball chain
Step 17
Cut an additional two-ball length of 1.5mm chain to fit inside the hanging loop.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, cutting a two ball length
Step 18
Place medium paste solder around the area where the bezel and backplate meet. Press the long chain into the solder, making sure it sits tightly against both the bezel and backplate.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, placing medium solder on the backplate
Step 19
Add medium paste solder between the sides of the hanging loop where it meets the bezel and backplate. Press the two-ball chain piece into place in the same way as the longer chain.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, adding solder and the two ball to the backplate
Step 20:
Soldering the Ball Chain Embellishment
Place the assembly on a soldering surface. Heat until the solder flows, using a solder pick to push the ball chain back against the bezel if it shifts while the flux bubbles.

Allow the assembly to cool completely before moving it.
Step 21:
Cleaning After Soldering the Ball Chain
Pickle the assembly, then neutralize it after removing it from the pickle if using Sparex. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

Continue to Step 30.

Note: I sometimes forget to take photos before going on to the next step. That is why these are already cut out instead of still on the square backplate-oops!
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Cleaning After Soldering the Ball Chain, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Rinse and dry the assembly.
Step 22:
Making Decorative Balls for Embellishment
For a pendant with decorative balls on the bottom edge and embellishments on the back, cut three 1/8", two 3/8", and one ¾" pieces of 18-gauge round Argentium wire.

Space the wire pieces on a soldering brick and use a butane torch to melt each piece into a ball. Let the balls cool completely.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Making Decorative Balls for Embellishment, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Space the cut pieces of wire out on a soldering brick.
Step 23
Holding each ball with chain-nose pliers, run the flatter side over 320- or 400-grit sandpaper to remove fire scale and any residue from the soldering surface.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, holding the made balls with chain nose pliers
Step 24:
Creating Leaf Embellishments
Stamp two tiny leaves, about 4.5mm long (measured without the stem), onto scrap 24- or 26-gauge sheet metal.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Creating Leaf Embellishments, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Cut the leaves out, minus the stems.
Step 25
Cut the leaves out, leaving off the stems.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, cutting out the stamped leaves
Step 26
Slightly shape the leaves in a dapping block. This makes them easier to use and gives them a more realistic appearance.

Hint: Make extra leaves-you'll find many uses for them!

Step 28:
Attaching Decorative Balls to the Bezel
Place medium paste solder around the inside bottom edge of the bezel and center the bezel on the backplate.

Add a dot of medium paste solder where the bezel and backplate meet at the bottom center. Press the prepared ¾" ball from Step 22 into the solder so it sits against both the bezel and backplate.

Attach a 3/8" ball on each side of the center ball in the same manner. Then add the 1/8" balls on the outside edges to complete the row of decorative balls.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Attaching Decorative Balls to the Bezel, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Place medium paste solder around the inside bottom edge of the bezel.
Step 29:
Soldering and Cutting Out the Pendant Assembly
Place the assembly on a soldering surface. Heat until the solder flows, using a solder pick to push the balls back against the bezel and together if they shift while the flux bubbles. Allow the assembly to cool completely before moving it.

Pickle the assembly, then rinse and dry it. This makes it easier to see where to cut away the excess metal.

Cut the pendant assembly out, leaving a narrow edge to file down. Be careful-if you cut too close, you risk cutting through the bezel.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Soldering and Cutting Out the Pendant Assembly, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Place the assembly on a soldering surface.
Step 30
Use a round file to enlarge and clean up the inside of the hanging loops on the clean lined simple pendant and the ball chain embellished pendant.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, pickle the assembly and then rinse and dry it.
Step 31
Use files and sanding pads to clean and refine the edges of each pendant.
Step 32:
Marking the Top for Back Embellishments
For a pendant with decorative balls on the bottom edge and embellishments on the back, first determine the center top of the pendant.

Mark the center point, then mark 1/8" to either side using an ultra-fine point retractable Sharpie.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Marking the Top for Back Embellishments, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Pendant with decorative balls on the bottom edge and embellishments on the back
Step 33:
Shaping and Preparing the Back Wire
Cut a 1-5/16" piece of 18-gauge dead soft round wire. Shape the wire to fit the back of the pendant as shown.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Shaping and Preparing the Back Wire, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, shaping wire to fit the back of the pendant
Step 34
Since these pendants were family gifts, I signed them and added a metal content stamp. The curved wire shape allowed space for this. Shape your wire as desired, but be sure to leave a loop at the top for attaching a bail.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, wire on the back
Step 35
Trim the wire shorter if needed. Hammer and/or file the lower end to thin it. Thinning the top end will also make it easier to curl.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, trim the wire shorter, and hammering the end to make it curl
Step 36
Place easy paste solder on the back of the pendant and on the curved hanging loop embellishment where they will connect.

Press the curved wire firmly into place on the back of the pendant.

Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, press curved wire into place
Step 37
Butter the back of each leaf with easy paste solder and press them into place. Use a toothpick to remove any excess solder.

Add a small dot of solder in the upper curl of the hanging loop wire. Press the final 1/8" ball into the solder so it rests against both the backing and the wire.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, adding solder and placing leaves
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - , Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, adding solder and placing leaves
Step 38
Place the assembly on a soldering surface. Heat until the solder flows, using a solder pick to reposition the ball and leaves if they shift while the flux bubbles.

Allow the assembly to cool completely before continuing.
Step 39
Pickle the assembly and neutralize it after removing it from the pickle if using Sparex pickle.

Rinse and dry the assembly.
Step 40:
Adjusting the Bail Opening
Some K13-11 bails may have an opening that is too tight to slide easily onto a thicker chain or an omega. To adjust, push the bail opening down on the larger barrel of an Acculoop precision round-nose pliers until one side reaches the 6mm mark.

Flip the bail and repeat on the other side so both openings match in size.

This process also shortens the bail slightly, giving it a larger and more custom look.

Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Adjusting the Bail Opening, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, Open the loop
Step 41
The hanging loop on this bail is open, which makes it easy to use. Open the loop and slide the pendant on so the front of the pendant faces away from the loop opening. Close the loop securely.

Tumble the pendant for several hours to bring out a bright, polished shine.
Step 42:
Adding Patina for Detail
Patina the pendant if desired to highlight the details.

Since removing patina from raised areas creates a more satin finish, tumble the pendant again for 20-30 minutes to restore the shine without stripping away the patina.
Judy Larson's Split Bead Earrings - Adding Patina for Detail, Contemporary Wire Jewelry, Filing, Finishing, , sanding, filing, polishing, raised areas imparts a more satin finish
Step 43
Add any needed shims to the bottom of the pendant bezels.

E-6000 will fill the gaps on the bottom of the broken bead half and provide cushioning as well as help with leveling.
Step 44
Set the stones in the pendant bezels.
