Instructions

Step 1

This Romanov weave is created using two sections of Byzantine chainmaille. Each section of Byzantine weave is made up of fourteen jumprings. You will need 30 jumprings in total to make one Romanov pendant or connector. Start preparing your materials for each section of Byzantine weave by perfectly closing two jumprings and having an open pile of twelve.

Step 2

To give yourself something to hold onto when starting to form your chainmaille sections, add the two closed jumprings onto a piece of wire.

Step 3

Attach one of the open jumprings through the two jumprings and close the jumpring fully ensuring the ends align and click into place.

Step 4

Attach another of the open jumprings through the two attached to the wire and close it so that you have a pair of jumprings linked onto another two.

Step 5

Attach two more jumprings through the second pair, so that there are three pairs of jumprings linked together.

Step 6

Use a pin to help fold back the last two jumprings so that they fall down towards the first. Open out the middle pair exposing the last two jumprings folded out.

Step 7

Place the pin between the two closed rings and the rings that you have folded back, so you can hook on another pair of jumprings through the folded back rings to lock the weave in place.

Step 8

The next pair of jumprings will be hooked through these two jumprings. Remember to always add the jumprings in pairs.

Step 9

Add on the next pair of jumprings.

Step 10

Add another pair through these, so that there is a link of three pairs of jumprings attached on to each other.

Step 11

Now that there are three pairs attached, start to fold the jumprings back and use the pin if required to open up the jumprings.

Step 12

Slide your next pair of jumprings through to create another 'knot' in the chainmaille.

This will complete your first section of Byzantine weave.

Step 14

Make two sections of the weave to create the chainmaille frame.

Use an eye pin or create one by making a loop in a small piece of wire.

Add the bead onto the eye pin.

Create a connecting loop at the opposite end of the bead by bending the pin closely to the bead in a 90-degree angle.

Step 18

Cut off the wire leaving a 1cm tail from the bend.

Use round nose pliers to turn the pin into a loop on the opposite side of the bead to form a double connector.

Step 20

Add a section of the weave to an open jumpring, and thread the jumpring through one of the loops on the pin holding the bead.

Step 21

Add the other section of the chainmaille weave, so that the bead is in the centre of the two and close up the jumpring.

Add another open jumpring through the chainmaille sections and the loop from the eye pin on the opposite side.

I'm Natalie Patten, I'm from Liverpool in the UK. I first discovered my love of wire work during lockdown and this hobby quickly spiralled into a huge passion and obsession, for wire wrapping crystal gemstones.
