Pearls that have not been taken care of properly will deteriorate over time. The 10mm freshwater pearls used in this project were from a highly deteriorated strand.
They were most likely put on before applying makeup and hair products, were never cleaned after wearing, and never stored properly.
After sorting through the pearls to save the best of them, there were not enough left for even a bracelet so earrings were made with them.

Instructions
Step 1
Only the leaf templates are used with these earrings, which can be enlarged or reduced to the desired size.
To create mirror images, reverse the template and print the desired number of copies on typing paper.

Step 2
Adhere the templates to 24 gauge sheet metal and separate the monstera leaf templates to allow enough room around each for cutting a negative space earring frame.
Cut out the leaf shapes, starting and ending at the center top of each monstera leaf.
After cutting the monstera leaf shapes, use a retractable Sharpie to mark where to cut for the monstera framework, not worrying about uneven cuts, as the framework width can be easily adjusted after it's attached to the backing in Step 12.

Remove the paper templates from the leaf shapes.

Cut a piece of 26 gauge sheet metal that will fit the monstera leaf frames.

Step 5
Use an ultra-fine point retractable Sharpie to transfer the midrib and side vein markings to the long skinny leaf.
Use a hammer and chisel to create the side indentations, being careful not to cut through the metal.

Step 6
Cut away enough of the top of the leaf frame so a closed 22-gauge 2mm ring will tightly fit between the ends, then apply medium paste solder to the back of each monstera leaf frame and the rings, and press the frame and ring into place on the textured background.
Because it can be difficult to add paste solder and push the midrib into place without disturbing the frame and jump ring, the unit can be soldered now.
If this is done, pickle, rinse, and dry the piece before going to the next step.

Step 7
Use the Sharpie to transfer the midrib lines to the monstera leaves.

If using leaf templates sized to the ruler in Step 1, cut two pieces of 22-gauge round wire to the following lengths for each set of leaves: Monstera leaf - 11/16", framed monstera leaf - 7/8", and Long skinny leaf - 1-5/8", then curve or straighten the wires as needed.
Place a small dot of medium past solder at the center top of the monstera leaves and the long skinny leaves.
Press a closed 22-gauge 2mm jump ring into the paste solder, then apply a thin line of medium paste solder along all the midrib lines and press the cut wire pieces into place on the appropriate leaves.

Place the pieces on a soldering surface and heat around each until the solder flows for the framework leaves, gradually heat the piece around the outside and down the center between the two frames.
Concentrate more on the double layers of metal rather than the backing, heating until the solder flows, then allow all the pieces to cool naturally.

Step 10
Pickle, rinse, and dry the pieces.

Cut around each framework leaf leaving a 1/16" frame.

Use files and sanding sponges to refine the outer edge of each earring.
Step 13
Place the monstera leaves on a bench block.

Tumbling the pieces for several hours will polish them.

The earrings are pretty the way they are, but adding patina will bring out the texture of the backing as well as the design shape of the negative space frame.

Remove patina from the high points of each piece using 0000 steel wool.

Many earring shapes can benefit from a bit of shaping.

Cut a 3½"of 22 gauge wire for each pearl.
Pearls have small holes so make sure the wire fits through the pearl holes before cutting.
