Instructions

Step 1

Straighten out an 8 inch length of 20 gauge wire.

Step 2

Starting 1 and 3/4 inch up from the end of the wire position the round nose pliers and create a sharp bend.

Step 3

Form a loop over the jaws of the round nose pliers.

Step 4

Wrap the tail end of the wire around three times to create a wrapped loop.

Step 5

Cut off any excess tail wire and tuck in the end firmly.

Slide the large bead onto the wire and position towards the loop.

Step 7

Create a loop on the other side of the bead, by bending the wire over the tip of the round nose pliers, leaving a small space between the bend and the bead.

Step 8

Bring the wire around the round nose pliers again to form a loop.

Step 9

Wrap the space between the loop and the bead with the wire to form a wrapped loop. Straighten the loop so that it sits directly on the top of the bead.

Straighten out the wire again to remove any kinks if needed.

Step 10

Curve the wire in a spiral motion around the bead traveling from the back around to the front until it reaches the bottom of the bead.

Step 11

Manipulate the wire, leaving a little space around the bead and the wire, ensuring it travels horizontally across the front of the bead to represent the "planets' ring system".

Step 12

Tighten the remaining wire around the bottom loop to secure it in place.

Step 13

Cut off any excess wire and tuck in the ends to prevent catching or snagging.

Adjust the wire with pliers as necessary.

Step 15

The wire can be strengthened to hold its shape around the bead, by applying a little pressure with some nylon coated or chain nose pliers along the edge.

Step 16

Create a dangling bead to hang from the bottom of the pendant, by cutting another length of wire about 4 inches long and staring about 1 inch up from the tip of the wire, make another bend.

Step 17

Form a loop with the round nose pliers.

Step 18

Before closing and securing the wrapped loop, attach this loop to the bottom loop underneath the planet bead.

Step 19

Make another wrapped loop to create a secure closure and cut off the remaining wire from the loop and tuck in the tail end to prevent any sharp ends.

Step 20

Slide on the smaller bead and position it in place closely underneath the loop.

Step 21

Bend the wire closely next to the bead hole.

Step 22

Wrap the remaining wire around the bead to encase it, framing the side of the bead up towards the loop.

Step 23

Travel the wire around the other side of the bead and in front of the drill hole in the bead to cover the exiting wire.

Step 24

Bring the wire back around the bead again and wrap around the neck of the wrapped loop to secure in place.

Step 25

Cut off any excess wire and firmly press in the tail end to the loop.

Step 26

The planet can now be attached directly to a chain or to a jump ring from the top loop or to an earring hook.

I'm Natalie Patten, I'm from Liverpool in the UK. I first discovered my love of wire work during lockdown and this hobby quickly spiralled into a huge passion and obsession, for wire wrapping crystal gemstones. So much so, that I changed my career working in education, to become a jewellery designer and set up my business Rock, Scissors, Paper specialising in wire wrapped, ethically sourced gemstone jewellery. I also secured my dream job designing and teaching for the UK's largest supplier of beads for jewellery making! I make lots of different jewellery designs with a variety of techniques but my absolute favourite is wire work and I feel absolutely blessed that I can spend my time creating, learning and sharing my passion with others!
