Do you like an earring with swish and swing? Do you like curves and straight lines in a piece? These earrings have these elements that allow for interest and movement. The fringe element provides the straight vertical lines while the body of the frame gives a sort of lotus petal appearance with its downward point and elliptical shape. I am drawn to styles of Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Bohemian, hippy and Neoclassical. Much of the work that I do is an eclectic mix of these styles and these earrings reflect that fusion of styles. Although these earrings are 1 ¾ inch (~4cm) long and 1 (2.5cm) inch at its widest, they can be made smaller or larger depending on the size of your mandrel and center coin bead. They can also be made without the bead in the middle for an all metal earring in silver, copper or gold fill.

Step 1:
The Outside Frame
Cut 40cm of 20gauge dead soft round wire.

Two helpful hints before beginning:
1. I recommend creating these earrings in copper to become more familiar with the instructions before advancing to silver. I use copper colored niobium ear wires with copper earrings, because they tend to be hypoallergenic.
2. Read all the instructions in this tutorial before beginning. Understanding the instructions before beginning makes the process go more smoothly if you know what is going to occur in the next step.

Fold the 40cm wire in half and pinch at the fold with flat nosed pliers so that the wires are parallel to each other.

Grab fold with the flat nose pliers and finger straighten the wire. Do not use nylon pliers, as they may harden the wire.

Pro Tip: The below steps are done with double the thickness of wire so that both earrings are created equally and evenly. This is why you have folded this 40cm of wire in half.

Make a mark with the permanent marker at 8cm from the unfolded ends of the wires.

Here I am showing you the bail making pliers that I use for this project. You can also use a 2mm dowel rod/mandrel if you don't have a bail making pliers.

These bail making pliers are 1.5mm on the small side and 2mm on the large side.

Using the large (2mm) side of the bail making pliers, grab both of the wires at the mark you just drew and make a crossing loop as shown in this photo. This is double thickness of wire since you folded the wire in half. This loop will be the top of the earring where the earring hook will hang.

Press the loop you just made firmly against the 7/8 " (21mm) large dowel rod with your fingers and curve the long folded side of the double thickness wire a little more than half around the dowel rod. Make sure that the wire is flush against the dowel when forming.

Make a mark on the double thickness wire with your permanent marker at the halfway-point directly across from the loop. It is important that your mark is centered directly across from the loop to make sure that the earring is symmetrical.

See how I hold the wire with my fingers so that it remains close to the dowel before making my mark.

Remove the dowel rod and using your flat nose or chain nose pliers make a bend at about a 100 degree angle.

Cut off fold at about 1mm from end to separate wires.

Using your chain nose pliers, create a deeper bend in each earring where you created your first bend at the halfway mark.

Gently, open up the bend by pulling on the straight wire with one hand and supporting your curved wire with your other fingers from your other hand.

Continue to shape the wire around the 21mm mandrel to create a full circle.

Wrap the end of the wire that you just wrapped around the 21mm dowel rod in front and around the base of the 2mm loop you made at the top.

Grab the end of the remaining straight 20g wire.

Trim off the excess wire. Make sure both wires are cut off at about the same place at the back of your earring. You wouldn't want to see a cut wire end at the front of the earring.

Using your flat nose pliers slightly pinch the two frames together so that they are in line and not spread apart.

The elliptical shape is made by pinching the point and the top loop while pulling down on the bottom of the inside frame. This requires steady firm pressure at all three points. Start soft with the pressure and then put more pressure until you have the desired shape.

Try to make both earrings the same shape with the same amount of pressure.

Using the metal bench block and hammer, slightly hammer the outside and inside frame to give it some strength and to harden the wire.

It is important that the top wrap and 2mm loop hangs off of the metal bench block while doing this, as this part will distort if hammered.

Bottom Dangle Loops
Cut 9cm of 20g round dead soft wire for the inside loops. Straighten the wire.


Pro Tip: You will be making five loops on this wire. The first and last two loops will be 1.5mm and the center loop will be 2mm.

The loops need to conform to the inside circle, so they are bent upward a little by pushing thumbs into the wire on either side of the bottom of the loop piece. It is important that the loops be facing downward for this to work.

Example of How to Make Loops Without Bail Pliers
(example only: this will not be used in this piece)
Note: Do not do this step unless you don't have bail pliers.

In the event you do not have bail making pliers, a 2mm or 1.5mm dowel or mandrel can be used. Here I show the process (in copper) of how to use the mandrel in place of the bail making pliers.

Wrap the end of the wire around the shaft of the mandrel 1 ¼ turns.




Place the mandrel next to the loop you just created.

Bring the wire end up and around the mandrel one full turn.

Remove the mandrel and repeat the process for a total of 5 loops. With this process there is not the middle larger loop as you have with the bail pliers, but this is really not noticeable in the finished design.
The loop pieces are placed side by side to demonstrate the difference in the two techniques. For the purpose of this tutorial I will not be using the copper loops.

The fringe is the straight pieces of wire that dangle off of the loop piece that was just created. By following the technique outlined below, the fringe can be made fairly evenly. I achieved this method by trial and error out of necessity. It works every time!!

Start off by cutting 31cm of 20g round dead soft wire. You will be creating the fringe for both earrings with this length of wire.

After finger straightening, the wire needs to be cut into ten 2.5cm sections. Both ends of each of the ten sections need to be flush cut as shown in the above example. I have allowed a little extra wire in the measurements for snipping off the pinched non-flush ends on each section of the ten 2.5cm lengths.

Making sure that wire is as straight as possible is important. I grab one end of the wire with my chain nose and the other end with the loop with the flat nose and pull the pliers away from each other. This is a good technique for straightening and slightly hardening short lengths of wire. Use a good deal of strength when doing this.

Using your steel bench block, hammer about 2mm from the end of the longest fringe wire. You want to hammer hard enough to make the bottom of the wire spread out so that the bead doesn't fall off. Make sure that you don't hammer the bead or the loop. Here I show how the bead and the loop are hanging off of the end of the steel bench block so that they will not be inadvertently hammered.

Repeat for all the other pieces of fringe wire.
Important: Make all the ends flat at about the same length so that all the beads fall at the same area on the wire, which is about 2mm from the end.

There!! The wire weaving is complete. I like to use my chain nose pliers to squeeze the weave together gently.

At this point you can cut the excess 26g wire from both the left and right sides. I keep them on to have something to hold on to for my patina dip.

Attaching the Fringe
Open each of the ten fringe loops with the chain nose pliers by swinging the loop to the side.
Put the longest fringe piece onto the center large loop with the opening to the back.
Hold the piece of fringe wire slightly forward while the loop is closed with the chain nose pliers the opposite way it was opened by swinging it back in place.

I find that when holding the fringe from the front that closing the loop is easiest from behind as illustrated in this photo.

After closing the loop I make sure the loop is flush with the rest of the fringe wire by compressing the loop to the wire with my chain nose pliers.

Hang the earrings so that the earring can be visualized for straightness and symmetry. If a fringe wire is not straight or something is off, use the flat nose pliers to gently straighten or fix the earring.

Patina
Prepare the liver of sulfur patina in a warm water bath and dip both earrings into the patina solution.

If dipping silver wire, leave the earrings in the solution for about two minutes and pull them out to check for desired results. Re-dip for longer if needed. I prefer a dark gunmetal appearance to silver wire.

If dipping copper earrings into the patina it is left in the solution for about 30 seconds and then pulled out to check for desired results. Copper grabs liver of sulfur patina more readily than silver.

Dip the remaining 30cm of 26g round dead soft wire into the patina until the desired appearance is achieved.

Rinse and wash the earrings and 26g wire that was just patinaed, dry and rub the earring surface and wire with 0000 steel wool. This is a very fine steel wool.
Pro Tip: When using the steel wool on the 26g wire I grab the wire with the steel wool wrapped around the wire and run the wire through the wool.
Pro Tip: Use rubber gloves to prevent little bits of steel wool from imbedding into your finger tips and to protect your skin from residual liver of sulfur.

Adding the Coin Bead
Cut a 15cm length of the patinaed 26g wire.

Put the coin bead onto the 26g wire so that middle of the bead is right at 6cm of the 15cm length of wire.

Note: Some beads do not work well in a patina solution. Pearls, turquoise and some shellacked Red Creek jasper do not do well. The patina will alter the nacre (iridescent) layer of pearls rendering it dull in appearance. It is for this reason why I patina the wire and earring and then add the bead as the last step.
