This Herringbone weave is a beautiful, yet simplistic, way to frame any size bead. This tutorial will guide you through creating your own connecting pin components, so that you can make effective links, perfect for earrings or necklace and bracelet chains. They can be adapted to work with many gauges of wire and sizes and shapes of bead and are easy and fun to make.

Create an eyepin using 1.5-2 inches of 20 gauge wire and turn a loop with your round nose pliers.

(The length of this can be adjusted to accommodate the size of the bead.)

Tilt the loop around the pliers to straighten and centre it.

The loop should be positioned so that it sits centrally at the top of the pin.

Cut 8 inches of 26-gauge wire (or more for extra wraps). Wrap it around the pin just below the loop to secure.

Cut off the tail end of weaving wire from the securing wrap and tuck down against the pin, before sliding your chosen bead onto the 20 gauge wire.

Step 6
Wrap the weaving wire closely around one side of the bead and around the back of the pin.

Step 7
Bring the weaving wire back around the front of the pin and closely around the other side of the bead.

Secure the weaving wire once around the opposite
end of the pin so that it can continue to travel back around the bead.

Bring the wire behind the first wrap and over the top of the pin.

Turn the pin around to face you when wrapping each side for ease, if necessary.

Each wrap should sit behind the previous one and anchor around the pin above it on each side.

Continue to create wraps in this way, ensuring that there are an even amount of wraps on both sides.

Keep the weaving wire straight and taught so that each wrap is positioned closely to the last.

Wrapping around the pin will create the herringbone weave effect.

The wraps will be placed neatly behind each other around the bead and positioned above each other when moving up the pin.

When you are happy with the amount of wraps around the bead and have an equal amount of wraps on each side, wrap the weaving wire once more around the core of the pin.

Trim off any excess wire and tuck in firmly to the pin to prevent any sharp tail ends.

Using round nose pliers form another loop at this end.

The beads will now have a loop at each end facing opposite directions, to enable them to connect onto each other and link together in a way that ensures the wrapped beads are facing the right way.

To connect each bead together, simply open up the loop on one end and connect it to a loop on another bead that faces the other direction.
