This tutorial will demonstrate how to create a Herringbone weave bangle using a single coil of memory wire.

Memory wire is a tempered Stainless Steel wire coil that holds its shape and form when expanded and released, making it adjustable to fit a range of wrist sizes.

The herringbone wrap is easy to create and adds intricate detail to any of your chosen beads.

Instructions

Step 1

Cut just over one coil/one and a quarter loops of memory wire, with memory wire cutters.

Step 2

Using round nose pliers or bail step pliers, turn a loop at one end of the memory wire, going in the direction of the curve in the memory wire.

Step 3

Tilt the loop around the pliers to straighten and centre it and ensure it is fully closed.

Step 4

The loop can be twisted and repositioned so that it faces the direction to sit flat against the wrist when worn.

Step 5

Cut a length of 26 gauge weaving wire around 12 inches in length (This can be longer depending on how many wraps you would like to create around the bead 12 inches is enough for 6 herringbone wraps around an 8mm bead.)

Wrap the weaving wire three times around the memory wire to secure onto the core of the bangle.

(For ease, this can be positioned in the middle of the bangle and slid into place after the weave has been completed.)

Step 6

Trim off the starting tail of the weaving wire and tuck in firmly to the bangle.

Slide your chosen bead onto the memory wire.

Step 7

Wrap the weaving wire closely around one side of the bead and bring it once around the memory wire towards the other side of the bead.

Step 8

Keep the weaving wire straight and close to the bead and turn the bangle towards you, ready to start the next wrap on the opposite side of the bead.

Step 9

Bring the weaving wire closely around the other side of the bead and behind the memory wire to hold the wrap in place.

The weaving wire should travel over the memory wire, ready to travel back around the bead again.

Step 10

Bring the wire back around the bead, placing the wire behind the first wrap and over the top of the memory wire.

Step 11

Each wrap should be positioned behind the last wrap when travelling around the bead and should anchor around the memory wire core on each side of the bead.

Step 12

Continue to create wraps in this way, ensuring that there is an even amount of wraps on both sides of the bead.

Step 13

Keep the weaving wire straight and taught so that each wrap is positioned closely to the last.

Wrapping around the memory wire will create the herringbone weave effect.

The wraps will be placed neatly behind each other around the bead and positioned above each other when moving up the memory wire.

Step 14

When you are happy with the amount of wraps around the bead and have an equal amount of wraps on each side, wrap the weaving wire twice more around the core of the memory wire bangle.

Step 15

Trim off any excess wire and tuck in firmly to the outside of the bangle to prevent any sharp tail ends.

Step 16

Slide the woven bead down towards the loop on the bangle.

Step 17

Cut another length of approximately 12 inches of weaving wire and wrap three times to secure it onto the memory wire.

Step 18

Add the next bead on to the memory wire, by opening up the coil slightly to retain its shape and create a Herringbone weave around the bead using the same technique as before.

Step 19

Once the bead has an equal amount of wraps either side, wrap the weaving wire twice around the core of the bangle, cut off and slide into position towards the previous bead.

Step 20

Add the beads individually onto the memory wire and push up to the last, after framing it with the Herringbone wrap, so that they sit closely next to each other.

Step 21

Continue adding on all of the beads and creating a herringbone wrap around each one until you have filled the required circumference of the bangle.

Step 22

When all of the beads are positioned, leave approximately 1cm of memory wire remaining after the last bead and cut off any excess memory wire with the memory wire cutters.

Step 23

Bend the memory wire in the direction you would like your loop to be positioned when formed.

Step 24

Use round nose pliers or bail step pliers to turn a loop.

Ensure the loops are fully closed on each end of the bangle

A clasp can be added to the loops to create a secure close if desired.
