Forget Me Not Pendant

I really enjoy experimenting with new designs using copper. This experiment came out so well that I decided to continue in copper, and the end result is this pendant. By changing the shape and colors of the crystals, you can change this design's mood. Use this pattern to create a single pendant, or make two and have a new pair of earrings!

Instructions

Step 1

Use two headpins to make charms with wrapped loops, using two 5mm daisy spacers, two 3mm round beads and one 6mm faceted bead as shown. Make one headpin charm using the remaining beads, but do not wrap it closed yet!

Step 2

Straighten, measure and cut the necessary wire. Center and then bend the wire around the middle of a marking pen, until the wire crosses itself, forming a teardrop.

Step 3

Use round nose pliers and make a small tight loop at each wires end, working toward the center.

Step 4

Place the largest jaw section of double barrel bail pliers immediately after and on the outside of one of the loops just made. Roll the wire away from the center, until the first loop almost meets the teardrop. Repeat on the other wire.

Step 5

On a bench block, use a chasing hammer to gently tap the crossover of the teardrop wires as well as the bottom curve of the teardrop and the top curves. Note: Do not hammer the crossover wires too hard, or they will break!

Step 6

Using 3-step round pliers and working directly off the coil, make a 3-coil bail and cut it from the coil.

Step 7

One at a time, open each of the top loops. Insert one end of the chain length into one loop, slide the triple coil bail onto the chain, and insert the other end of the chain into the opposite loop. Then add a wrapped headpin charm to the loop and firmly close both side loops.

Step 8

Attach the remaining headpin charm to the bottom curve and wrap it closed.

For more than 20 years, Mary has been continually learning and expanding on her knowledge of the art of scrimshaw. As a 'scrimshander' she is continually seeking new ideas and techniques to enhance what she creates on her hand etched cabochons. It was such a need that led Mary to find and contact Dale with regard to expanding her basic wire artistry skills, taking them to a higher level to compliment her scrimshaw creations.

Mary's scrimshaw work has been published in such magazines as Knives Illustrated, Blade Magazine, Wire Jewelry Artist, and Colored Stone. She has taken awards for her scrimshaw work at custom knife shows and at Dragon-Con.

Mary resides in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, Joseph, a custom knife maker and rock hound. Together they share a love of gems, minerals and lapidary (both being members of the Mid-Tennessee Gem & Mineral Society club). Because of their different artistic crafts, their interests blend in many ways.

From that first contact with Dale (over 10 years ago) has grown a bond between two creative women that has remained strong to this day. "Dale and I seem to balance each other in so many ways. We use each other as sounding boards for ideas and designs. She is my teacher as well as my friend."
