When Wirejewelry.com called to tell me that they were short five feet of wire from an order I placed, I said "No problem! Just add something of equal value to the order-surprise me!" I was thrilled to receive 28 gauge copper plated brass sheet. My mind was whirling with the all possibilities! Here is one for you to try. I made my own rivets, but use premade rivets or eyelets for a different look. Use plain metal sheet or a coin as the centerpiece of your design.

Instructions
Step 1
It is very important to read through the instructions through before beginning. I used Eva Sherman's Fun, Fast Fold Forming DVD series to learn the fold forming and air chasing technique. You can also find the technique on YouTube.

Both the 18 gauge copper sheet and 28 gauge copper plated brass sheet cuff pieces should be cut 1¼" wide. Use the information given on Eva Sherman's Fun, Fast Fold Forming DVD series to determine the length needed. The 28 gauge piece should be cut at least 1" longer than the 18 gauge base since fold forming shortens it a lot. It will be cut to fit in Step 18. Note: 18 gauge sheet is used instead of 20 gauge used in the DVD series because of the narrower cuff width. If using nickel silver or brass sheet, for the base, 20 gauge can be used as they are harder than copper.
Pro Tip: Make colored index card templates for the base and fold formed pieces to make finishing easier. The edge of the fold formed piece should be approximately 1/8" (no more than 3/16") inside the edge of the base cuff

Step 2
Cut a 1¾" square piece of 24 gauge silver sheet. 26 gauge can be used if the sheet is nickel silver or brass.

Step 3
Mark out a 1½" square on a piece of 24 gauge brass sheet. Use an ultra fine point Sharpie marker to make center lines on the square, making four equal quadrants. Place the sheet in the disc cutter, centering the crossed lines in the 11/16" hole (no smaller than 5/8"). A 13/16" hole was cut for the 24.4mm Colombian 200 pesos coin. A US quarter is 24.26 mm. Cut the hole. Then cut the square out to make it easier to work with.

Step 4
Place a piece of scrap leather over a dapping block depression that is slightly larger than the diameter of the hole in the brass square. The leather helps the metal from being marked by the edge of the depression when dapping. Center the hole over the depression. Use a dapping punch that fits the block depression the push the edges of the hole in the brass square into the depression. Try to make the edges on the brass plate evenly pushed into the depression. Do not overwork the square. It can help make a more even impression if the dap is pounded into the hole by hand instead of with a hammer.

Step 5
Pro Tip: Paint the domed disc ONLY if the cuff will not get hard use. Paint may chip off if it is tumbled. Otherwise, texture it or leave it smooth.
Cut a 1" disc from 24 gauge copper sheet. Sand the top of the disc to create "tooth" to make it easier for paint to adhere to the metal. Dap the disc until it fits into the brass piece created in Step 4. Go back and forth between Step 4 and 5 until the fit is a bit loose, as shown in the photo. It tightens up a bit when the cuff is formed (see Steps 36, 37 and 38). Optional: Dome a coin of a similar size. The hole size may need to be changed to fit the coin if a different size is used. If a thick coin is used, such as the coin here, the outer edge may need to be sanded off at the domed angle after shaping for a better fit. Note that coins are very hard and can damage your tools so may need to be annealed to dome them. However, check the metal content as during heating they give off toxic fumes.

Step 6
If needed to help round the edge of the base of the hole, place a ¼" dowel close to the rounded edge of the hole on the brass square. Lightly hammer the dowel, moving it around the rounded edge to even it out. Use the narrow side of the Mini TruStrike Sharp Designer Hammer to texture around the edge of the square, being careful to avoid the pushed up "bezel" portion.

Step 8
Use a pair of shears to trim an irregular circle around the brass square. It should be smaller than the silver square and not extend very far over the edge of the cuff base. Step 7 may need to be repeated after cutting

Step 9
Center the brass piece on the silver square. Use an ultra fine point Sharpie marker to draw a line around it. Make registration marks on the bottom of the brass piece and the top and bottom of the silver piece so it will be easier to assemble later.

Step 10
Cut the silver square into the irregular shape of the brass piece, cutting about 1/16" outside the drawn line. Cutting distorts the metal so use a plastic mallet to flatten it on a bench block. Use an alcohol soaked pad to remove the Sharpie markings from the top of the silver piece. Use a sanding pad to clean up the edges of both pieces.

Step 11
Pro Tip: If the domed disc became too smooth during the dapping process, lightly sand it again.
This step must be done quickly as the paints dry very fast. Have the paints open, a small dish of water and swabs ready. Soak the end of a cotton swab in one color. Dab the paint onto several areas of the domed disc. Repeat with the other two colors. Use a water soaked swab to blend the colors a bit.
Pro Tip: Add a bit of translucent white for a more authentic look. Allow to the paints to dry.

Step 12
Use two to three coats of Krylon colormaster crystal clear acrylic spray to seal the "cabochon" just created. Hint: I live in northern Minnesota and when I was making this cuff, the temperature was 30 degrees below zero, so I thought I could not spray outdoors. But, I put the painted dome in a small box (8x12x6), had the spray ready (lid off and shaken for several minutes) and ran into the garage where I quickly sprayed the first coat and cleared the spray nozzle before quickly running back indoors with the spray can and box. All the fumes stayed in the garage. I did this several times and there were no fumes in the house from the drying acrylic.

Step 13
Use e-6000 to glue the "cabochon" between the silver and brass pieces, making sure to line up the registration marks. Notice that some of the glue seeped out. DO NOT try to remove it. When it dries, use a pair of bent nose or chain nose pliers to easily tear/pull away the excess glue.
Pro Tip: Using glue is not necessary but it does make assembly easier.

Step 14
Ball the end of the piece of 16 gauge wire. The ball may be off center, but after it is cut up to ½" long, use a pair of flat nose pliers to grasp close to the tip. Press the ball against a flat surface to bend it more in line with the wire shaft. Hint 1: Place the balled wire in the jig vice (see Step 15) and cut the wire end flush with the back of the jig. It is easier to flatten the heads in the next step if the cut end does not protrude from the back of the vise. Hint 2: 16 gauge wire was used in this tutorial. For a more delicate look, use 18 gauge wire. Repeat until 18 to 20 pieces have been made.

Step 15
Option A (preferred): Insert the wire shank into the hole it best fits. Use the flat side of the Mini TruStrike Planishing Hammer to flatten the ball. Repeat for each balled wire piece. Hint: For an industrial/steampunk look, anneal the rivets, place back in the vise, then use a small slotted (flat) screwdriver to lightly punch a line across the center of each rivet top
Option B: Secure a balled wire piece in the Miter Joint Jig Vise Tube Cutting Filing Block Miter Vise. Use the flat side of the Mini TruStrike Planishing Hammer to flatten the ball. Repeat for each balled wire piece.

Step 16
Trim the ends of the 18 gauge copper cuff base to a desirable shape. Use a sanding sponge to clean up any scratches on the front and back. Use an ultra fine point Sharpie to mark a center line on the front and back. Now is the time to put your makers mark on the center line on the back of the piece.

Step 17
Use the Sherman Fold from Eva Sherman's Fun, Fast Fold Forming DVD series to texture the 28 gauge copper plated brass sheet. It is very important for making the cuff in this tutorial that the finished textured piece be annealed after the last step is completed. Pickle it to clean off all the fire scale. Note: The Sherman fold and air chasing are the only ones that can be used for this cuff design as they can "stretch" a bit when hammered during forming and the others cannot. Use a soft brass bristol brush to buff and polish the fold formed piece.

Use a sanding pad to remove the copper plating from fold formed piece on the side that will show. Polish with the brass brush again, and then with 1200 and 2000 grit sandpapers. Use an ultra fine point Sharpie marker to mark the center of the fold formed piece so it can be matched up with the center line on the 18 gauge cuff base.

Step 22
Mark an arrow on the back of the design piece and on the flat area of the fold formed piece to make it easier to match up when riveting all three pieces together (shown in the above photo).
Step 23
Hint: Keeping a supply of various sized pieces of balled silver could help in deciding where to place the silver rivets. Stack all the cuff pieces together. The rivets must be placed in the depressions of the fold formed piece. Decide upon a pleasing arrangement. Use an ultra fine point Sharpie marker to mark the places where the holes for the rivets need to be made. Note: The fold formed piece has not been trimmed to size yet in this photo. Also, I had hoped to place the rivets on the center piece a bit more off center than I did as I thought it would fit the character of the piece better, but my mind wandered-lol.

Step 27
Center the fold formed piece on the 18 gauge base, matching the center marked lines. Use an ultra fine point Sharpie marker to make marks on the cuff base through holes on opposite corners of the fold formed piece. Use the center punch to make divots for seating the drill bit. Place the cuff base on the wood piece and drill the holes with the 5/64" drill bit (1/16" drill bit for 18 gauge rivets).

Step 28
Place the rivet through the hole in one corner of the fold formed piece and the corresponding hole in the cuff base. Place the head of the rivet on a bench block. Stack two #16 rivet tiles over the rivet shank used on the cuff ends. Hint: It may be advantageous to use two #16 and one #18 rivet tiles on the rivet shanks of the center decorative element. Make sure that the rivet shank follows a straight line up from the nail set. Use a flush cutter to cut the rivet shank flush with the tile. Hint: Shown in the photo on the right: Make your own rivet tiles, from my article "Rivet and Eyelet Tools": Cut three discs out of 22 gauge brass sheet metal. Drill a hole in each.

Step 29
Place the rivet head side down on a smooth portion of the bench block as marks on the block will show up on the rivet heads. Use the domed side of the Mini TruStrike Planishing Hammer to start spreading the rivet back. Finish with the flat side of the hammer. The front of the rivet will spread to be at bit larger as well.

Step 30
Repeat the process with a rivet in the opposite corner.
Step 31
Center punch, drill holes and secure rivets on opposite sides closer to the center.
Step 32
Continue the process, going from one end of the cuff to the other, until the rivets securing the fold formed piece to the cuff base have been completed.
Step 33
Decide where and how the center piece will be positioned. Use an ultra fine point Sharpie marker to mark two opposite corners on the fold formed piece. Remove the center piece. Use the center punch to make divots on the marks for seating the drill bit. Drill the holes.
Step 34
Attach the rivets as before, but keeping the rivet head on the edge of the bench block so the domed piece does not become marred and/or flattened.
Step 35
Center punch and drill the two remaining holes. Secure the rivets.

Step 36
Use a large "C" clamp to attach a stepped oval bracelet mandrel to the work surface. Center the cuff on one of the center sizes to start with. Since this cuff is a size small, one size up from the smallest was used to start. Go up or down depending upon the size being made.

Step 37
Start bending the cuff around the mandrel by hand. Notice "corners" seem to be bent next to the center section. Use a 5/8 Inch Double Rubber/Nylon Head Hammer to form the cuff to the shape of the mandrel (shown in Step 38 photo). It is too easy to damage the center section and flatten the fold formed piece too much if a larger mallet is used.

Step 38
Keep forming the cuff around the mandrel by hand as much as possible. Use the small rubber/nylon hammer to fine tune the forming, as well as flatten the edges of the fold formed piece a bit. The fold formed piece will end up flatter than how it is used in the Eva Sherman Fun, Fast Fold Forming DVD series.

Step 39
When the desired shape is approximate, start working on the outer edges of the brass center piece. The center piece can be curved a bit, which tightens up the hole opening.

Step 40
The mandrel shape is a bit more round than the oval of most wrists, so a bit of hand shaping will be necessary.
Pro Tip: If the cuff will be tumbled for finishing and polishing, make sure that the edges of the fold formed piece are pressed against the base cuff enough that shot will not get stuck under the edges. Remember, painted cabs can't be tumbled, the paint may chip off.

Step 41
Optional: Use an agate burnisher to really shine up the high spots of the exposed brass, the tops of the Argentium rivets and the textured edge of the center piece. Separate a clothespin and use one piece to push the metal in a bit around the Faux Roman Glass cabochon.

Step 42
Use liver of sulfur to patina the entire piece. Since brass does not patina much with liver of sulfur, those areas will be highlighted. Use 0000 steel wool to remove excess patina. If too much is removed, don't worry. As the piece "ages," the copper will patina darker, while the brass remains brighter.
Step 43
If desired, the entire piece can be sprayed with several light coats of Krylon colormaster Crystal Clear Acrylic Spray.
