In 2020, Wire Jewelry.com assembled a lineup of fabulous teachers to stream live classes from Tuscon, so I signed up for all of them. The classes were all great and I highly recommend them.

One class you HAVE TO TAKE is Linda Larsen Building Lockets And Using Hinges. Hinges will no longer be a mystery.

During the class Linda will give you great tips and will answer tons of questions in a way that is very easy to understand.

As a teacher, I know how much students appreciate that. Immediately after the class I scaled a pattern for the hinged arrowhead earrings made in class so I could replicate them in brass. Love them!

Instructions
Step 1
There are many different types of hinges but most require soldering.

Let's work on a super-simple one: a no-solder hinge.

Since this hinge has an artisanal look and is not supposed to look like hinges on high-end jewelry, it is perfect for beginners!

The easiest hinge to construct when first starting is a three-leg hinge (the "legs" form the knuckles of the hinge).

In the classes I taught, everyone started with 1/8" graph paper with scaled rectangles that fit the sheet metal I provided.

Not everyone has the confidence to design their own pendant when making hinges for the first time so a simple shape the same size as the rectangles was offered.

There are always a few students who want more of a challenge so a set of five "leg" hinge rectangles were included.

The necklace in this tutorial started with the rectangle shape in the first photo.

Step 2
Sketch out a desired size and shape pendant, including approximately a 3/16" width for the area taken up by the hinge.

To make the pendant shape symmetrical, cut one half the length (first photo).

Fold the pendant shape lengthwise down the center (second photo).

Cut the second side of the pendant along the edge of the section folded over (third photo).

Step 3
Cut out the pendant template, removing the added hinge section.

Note: Since there was a chance there would not be enough room for the phrase to be stamped on the inside of the pendant, the template was cut down the center of the hinge section.

Glue the templates to graph paper.

Step 4
Decide on hinge "leg" placement. Hinged jewelry is "played" with and the hinges can become stressed over time.

On items that will receive a lot of use, such as a pendant, it is a good idea to make the center of a three knuckle hinge a bit wider than the outer section.

Why? The center section receives the most stress and the wider knuckle provides more stability.

Because the moveable part of this pendant is the lower part, the leg option in the second photo ensures that that section will not as easily wiggle sideways.

Note: All the parts are glued to graph paper to make sure everything is square and even.

Make a copy of the finished template.

Cut it apart and use a glue stick to adhere the templates to 24- or 22-gauge copper sheet.

This original sheet should be saved so it can be copied in case the pendant is made again.

Step 5
Start with the hinge legs.

Metal shears will work just fine for this step.

It is easy to cut the metal away from the single leg hinge section using shears.

Step 6
Use shears to cut to the bottom end of each leg on the two-leg section.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , cut out the metal pieces
Step 7
It is easy to remove the excess metal between the two legs.

Grasp the metal close to the top of the pendant at the bottom of the legs (first photo).

Bend the section up (second photo). Bend the section down (third photo).

Repeat the process until the section breaks away (fourth photo).

Step 8
Use a file to remove any excess metal and to square the corners of the opening.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , file the corners
Step 9
Finish cutting both pendant pieces out.

Remove the paper templates.

File and refine the edges, being careful to not remove metal from the hinge legs.
Step 10
It may be necessary to file the legs for the hinge pieces to fit together.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , file the pieces to fit together
Step 11
Use three layers of tape to secure the legs of each pendant section to a bench block.

The three layers of tape will protect the legs from hammer strikes using a Mini TruStrike Designer/Texture Hammer.

Texture around the edge of each piece.

Add just a few texture marks to the interior of each piece.

Leave the piece taped to the bench block.

Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , texture the metal
Step 12
With the piece still taped to the bench block, stamp a sentiment on the lower pendant section using 1.5mm or 2mm letter stamps.

The size used depends on the length of the saying and the size of the words.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , stamp the words on the metal
Step 13
Embellishments are not necessary but add personality to the pendant.

Use the original template to cut out a flower shape, leaves, and a heart from metal scraps.

The embellishments on this pendant were soldered in place using easy paste solder for silver.

The second photo shows how to connect the two leaves to cut them out as one piece. Punch a hole in both the flower and the leaves section -blue dots- so they can be riveted in place later in Step 25.

The heart is not necessary - it just fits with the sentiment stamped on the pendant stamp a heart shape and/or the word "HEART" instead.

Step 14
If soldering, solder the pieces in place on the two pendant pieces using easy paste solder for silver.
Step 15
If the embellishments were soldered in place, pickle, rinse and dry the pieces before continuing.
Step 16
Texturing can slightly change shape and size of the pieces.

If the hinge legs no longer fit together, lightly file and refine them again.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , file the pieces again if necessary
Step 17
Use an ultra-fine point retractable Sharpie to draw lines on the pendant pieces where the hinge legs will be bent.

Bend the hinge legs toward the right side of the pendant pieces.

Place the flat-nose pliers below where the hinge leg is to be bent (second photo) not above (third photo).

Bend the hinge legs up at a 60 degree angle, using the plier jaws to make a sharp bend.

Check and refine the fit again.

Step 18
Keep track of the pliers used to form hinges. Note which barrel was used, the length of the flange, the gauge of the sheet, and the size tubing used.

Also, know your tools. Just because a barrel is labeled a certain size, measure it. It may be a bit larger or smaller. It might make a difference when rolling the leg into a tube shape.

The barrels on my favorite Wubbers Bail Making Pliers do not measure the same as listed on the package but the minor differences are not a problem when making these hinges.

These are the bail making pliers on my workbench that are used to make hinges using 22 and 24 gauge sheet metal:

Blue handle small barrel (1.5mm) 1/4"+1mm leg large barrel (2.56mm) 3/8" leg-3/32" tube

Sm. Wubbers small barrel (2.29mm) 3/8" leg-3/32" tube large barrel (2.8mm) 1/2" leg-1/8" tube

Med. Wubbers small barrel (3.5mm) 1/2" leg-1/8" tube large barrel (5.2mm) 3/4" leg-1/4" tube
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , pliers
Step 19
Using the small barrel of the Medium Wubbers Bail Making Pliers, roll a leg toward the back of the pendant piece.

Repeat the process for all three pendant legs.
Pro Tip: Copper is a very soft metal. If using a harder metal, it may be easier to form the tube if the piece is annealed first.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , roll the metal
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , roll the metal
Step 20
The hinge tubes may not allow the pendant pieces to lie flat on a bench block (first and second photos).

Put the piece on a bench block and press it down close to the hinge to make the hinge in line with the back of the pendant piece.

A thick ruler can help (third photo). Check the hinge fit once again.

Step 21
Choose copper tubing that will fit inside the hinge tubes created.

For this pendant, 1/8" tubing was used.

3/32" tubing could be used, but the hinge would probably be loose and wobbly.
Pro Tip: Small tubing for jewelry making can be found in aluminum, brass, and copper-and of course silver and gold.

Search for a copper tubing assortment to find a set of a variety of tubing sizes: 1/16, 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4 O. D.

Linda Larsen suggests that using only three sizes of tubing will make it easier when designing jewelry with this type of hinge.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , tubing
Step 22
Connect the two pendant pieces together, lining up the two hinge sections.

Make sure the leading end of the copper tubing selected is cut square , or perpendicular, to the tubing length.

Slide the tube through the three hinge sections.
Use an ultra-fine point retractable Sharpie to mark the other end of the tubing where to cut to be the same amount protruding.
Leave 1.5mm to 2mm of tubing protruding from the hinge.

A pipe or tubing cutter may squash the tubing. Secure the tubing in a tube cutting jig.

Use a saw with a 2/0 or 3/0 blade to cut the tube to length (second photo).
Another option to connect the hinges: Determine how many pieces of 20-gauge wire will fit through the hinge.

Cut that many plus one more 3" long pieces of copper wire. Ball one end of each wire using a small butane torch. One at a time, thread the wires through the hinge so various lengths of balled wire are left revealed.

Ball the wire ends on the other end of the hinge. If those wires are too long, they can be cut back before balling. Pull the wire ends apart and bend them in organic directions like tree branches.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , slide the tube through the hinge
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , trim the tubing
Step 23
Both ends of the tubing should be flared out.

A small dapping punch that is larger than the tube opening (first photo) or the rounded side a Mini TruStrike Planishing Hammer (second photo) will work to do this.

Fold the hinged pieces flat against each other as in the second photo.

Place the hinge tube on the corner or edge of a bench block.

Lightly tap the center of the tubing to start flaring on one side.

Turn the hinge over and repeat the process.

Keep working one side and then the other side of the hinge tubing until the tube is evenly flared on both sides and will not slide out of the hinge.

Do not flare the tubing so much that the hinge cannot freely move.

Step 24
Cut a backing piece of 20- or 22-gauge sheet metal larger than the piece just created.

Texture the back of that piece if desired.

Make sure the backing is flat before continuing.

Step 25
No-Solder Option: Punch holes in the embellished section where rivets will connect it to the backing.

The paper template shows one rivet placement option and this photo shows another.

Three rivets are best.

Position the embellished piece on the backing.

Use an ultra-fine point retractable Sharpie marker to mark rivet placement on the backing for ONE rivet (rivets NEVER line up when ALL the holes are cut at the same time).

Cut or drill the hole.

Complete that rivet before moving to the next repeat for the three rivets
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , rivet the pieces together
Step 26
Use an ultra-fine Point Sharpie to draw a line on the backing 1/8" away from the attached piece.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , trace around the pendant
Step 27
Cut away the excess backing using the drawn line as a guide.

File and refine the edge of the backing.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , cut away the excess metal
Step 28
Choose and stamp a sentiment on the backing inside the pendant.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , stamp the words
Step 29
Taping the pendant in place on a bench block can help in this step.

Stamp evenly spaced lines on the pendant backing around the upper attached portion of the pendant.

Draw a line on the lower backing approximately 3/16" in from the edge.

Stamp evenly spaced lines around the lower pendant backing from that line out to the edge.

Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , draw a line around the pendant
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , stamp lines around the edge
Step 30
Choose a chain to attach to the pendant.

Here, double 18-gauge 3.5mm jump rings made the chain.

4mm and 5mm copper beads were made into connectors with 20-gauge wire.

to slide over the head without a toggle or lobster claw closure, the chain should be approximately 24" long.
Judy Larson's Easy No Solder Hinges - , General Education, , add a chain
Step 31
Since the jump rings were not soldered and finished, the chain was a bit scratchy as all the jump rings were not closed to be super smooth.

Using sanding sponges on the finished chain helped a lot.

Tumbling the piece for several hours helped some more, but only a bit.
Step 32
The pendant is fine as is (first photo), but adding patina to copper creations (second photo) adds depth to the design and highlights all the work that was put into making the piece.

Removing the excess patina from the chain using sanding sponges a second time made a HUGE difference in the smoothness of the chain.

Tumbling the piece again for 30 minutes brought back the shine.

The hinged portion of the pendant may become stuck to the backing while tumbling.

If this happens, hand polish the interior of the pendant.
