Instructions
Step 1
I've accumulated a lot of small bezel-edged druzy stones-and it's time to put them to use.

When working with irregular, non-calibrated stones, I recommend starting with some loose sketches or laying out your components to explore what fits your style and the stones' natural shape.

Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Just lay out pieces and parts to see what will work well with your design esthetic
Step 2
Begin by making your bezels-this helps protect the druzy stones throughout the design and assembly process.

Use 3/16" fine silver bezel wire to create a snug fit for each stone. Solder the seams using hard paste solder, then reshape the bezels around their stones.

Once shaped, flatten and level the bottoms using 320 grit sandpaper on a bench block.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Start by making the bezels
Step 3
For the thinner white triangle stone, I adjusted the bezel height rather than adding a shim-this demonstrates how to tailor a bezel for a fine crystal druzy.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, needed adjusting due to its height
Step 4
Use 3/16" fine silver bezel wire for a snug fit.

Solder the seams with hard paste solder, reshape around the stones, then flatten and level the bottoms on 320 grit sandpaper over a bench block.

Step 5
Begin selecting your broom or straw cast components to pair with the druzy stones. Some pieces may need to be stacked or layered to achieve the look you want.

Once you're satisfied with the arrangement, place the assembly on a magnesite soldering block and use medium paste solder to secure the pieces together.

Heat the assembly evenly until the solder flows. If any elements shift, use a soldering pick to nudge them gently back into place. Allow everything to cool completely before handling.
Pro Tip: Make a few extra assemblies while you're at it. Having options during final design layout is helpful-and any extras won't go to waste.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Pull together broom/straw cast pieces to pair with the druzy stones
Step 6
Pickle the assemblies and neutralize them in baking soda water after removing them from the pickle if using sparex pickle.

Rinse and dry the assemblies before continuing.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Neutralize them in baking soda water
Step 7
If the broom/straw cast assemblies seem a little sparse when paired with a druzy, add more pieces in the same manner as in Step 4.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Add more pieces in the same manner as in Step 4
Step 8
Trace your paired assemblies onto paper, then transfer and adhere those outlines onto 24-gauge sheet metal.

Saw out each backplate shape carefully. If you plan to add any texture or design to the backplates, now is the time to do it-before any soldering begins.

Once cut, flatten each backplate and thoroughly clean the front surface with abrasive paper or a scrubbing pad to ensure strong, reliable solder joints.
Pro Tip: When making multiples, number the back of each druzy and scratch the same number inside its matching backplate for easy identification.

Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Then transfer and adhere the outlines to 24-gauge sheet metal
Step 9
Apply medium paste solder to the inside bottom edge of each bezel, then press it onto its matching backplate.

Next, apply solder to the back of each broom or straw cast assembly and position it inside the bezel.

Place the assembled pieces on a magnesite soldering block. Using a butane torch, heat each piece until the solder flows-focusing extra heat on the heavier cast components to ensure even soldering.

Allow the pieces to cool completely before handling.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Apply medium paste solder
Step 10
If using Sparex or a similar pickle, soak the assemblies to remove oxidation, then neutralize them in a baking soda and water solution.

Rinse and dry thoroughly before moving on.

Note: Pickling isn't strictly necessary at this stage, but it can help clean the surface enough to better visualize where to add embellishments in the next step.
Step 11
If your broom or straw cast assemblies need extra embellishment, now is the time to add them. Use medium paste solder to secure any additional components.

You might wonder why we didn't combine Steps 3, 5, and 7 all at once-but stacking multiple layers in a single soldering session can be unpredictable. Unsecured parts often shift as the solder begins to flow, making precise placement difficult.

Working in stages keeps everything stable and gives you more control, making the construction process smoother overall.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Add them now using medium paste solder
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Combine Steps 3, 5, and 7
Step 12
Position the assemblies on a magnesite soldering block. Using a butane torch, heat each piece until the solder flows-concentrating the heat on the heavier broom or straw cast components, which require more energy than the bezels.

Once the solder has flowed, allow the pieces to cool completely before handling.
Step 13
Carefully saw out each pendant assembly, leaving a narrow border of metal around the bezel to allow for refining the shape.

Take care not to cut too close-doing so can risk damaging or cutting through the bezel.

Use files to smooth and shape the edges until the pendant outline is clean and refined.

Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, File and refine the edges of the pendants
Step 14
For bezels that haven't been adjusted to account for uneven druzy thickness, flatten and level the tops by gently sanding the assembly on 320 grit sandpaper over a bench block.
Step 15
Pickle the assemblies to remove oxidation, then neutralize them in a baking soda and water solution if you're using Sparex or a similar pickle.

Rinse thoroughly and dry before moving on.
Step 16
Each bail assembly is made from twisted 18-gauge square Argentium wire.

Start by twisting two separate wires-one clockwise, the other counterclockwise.
Pro Tip: Twisting wire not only adds visual interest but also helps straighten it, making it easier to work with when forming the bail.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Twist two separate wires, each in different directions
Step 17
Cut one 2" piece from each of the twisted wires you made in Step 13. Bend each wire at the center so they nest together, as shown in the photo or diagram.

Note: I use this bail style for a variety of pendant sizes. I leave 1" tails on each wire because I never know exactly how long the bail will need to be-or what embellishments I might add between the tails.
Step 18
Apply medium paste solder to the inside edge of one of the wire ends, then place it on a magnesite soldering block.

Push the end of the second twisted wire into the soldered joint, aligning the twists as closely as possible.

Heat the assembly until the solder flows, then let it cool completely before handling.

Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Place the piece on a magnesite soldering block
Step 19
Cut the soldered section 7/8" long.

File the sides of the end into a point.

Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, File the sides of the end into a point.
Step 20
Roll the bail end with the solder showing is rolled to the inside on step 3 of the 6 step barrel pliers.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Roll the bail end with the solder
Step 21
The "V" wires may need to be bent out more to push the filed point between them.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Need to be bent out more
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Push the filed point between them
Step 22
Apply medium paste solder inside the bail loop and at the filed point between the wire tails.

Position the bail assembly on a magnesia soldering block, then heat the piece until the solder flows.

Use caution during heating-thin wire can melt quickly if overheated.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Place the bail assembly on a magnesia soldering block
Step 23
Cut a 1½" length of 18-gauge round wire for each bail. Ball one end using a torch, then flatten the balled tip so it matches the thickness of the twisted wire.

Gently spread the bail tails apart. Apply medium paste solder just in front of the bail point and slightly to each side.

Slide the flattened ball between the tails and into position. Heat the assembly until the solder flows, then allow it to cool completely before moving.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Flatten the ball to the thickness of the twisted wire
Step 24
For each bail, cut one 5/8" and one 1½" piece of 18-gauge round wire. Ball and flatten both ends of each wire to match the thickness of the twisted wire.

Apply medium paste solder in front of the bail point and to both sides. Slide the smaller flattened ball into the soldered area and press it gently into place.

Add a touch more solder to the end of the small ball, then position the larger ball so it touches the first.

Heat the entire assembly until the solder flows. Let it cool completely before handling.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Spread the wire tails
Step 25
Gently bend the tail wires so they curve around the sides of the flattened balls.

Apply medium paste solder along the contact points where the tails meet the flattened balls.

Heat the bail assembly until the solder flows, then allow it to cool completely before continuing.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Bend the tail wires
Step 26
Continue shaping the twisted wire tails so they curve around the larger flattened ball.

Trim the tails so they stop just short of meeting at the bottom of the disk-leave enough space for a balled 1/8" piece of 18-gauge round wire to fit snugly between them.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Continue to shape the twisted wire tails around the flattened larger ball
Step 27
Pickle the bails to remove oxidation, then neutralize them in a baking soda and water solution if using Sparex or a similar pickle.

Rinse thoroughly and dry before proceeding.
Step 28
For each bail, ball a 1/8" piece of 18-gauge wire. Leave the balled ends rounded-do not flatten them.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Ball a 1/8” piece of 18 gauge wire for each bail
Step 29
Apply medium paste solder to the side of the bail that will sit against the back of the pendant.

Press the bail into position, ensuring it is centered, straight, and that the loop touches the top edge of the pendant.

Carefully place the entire piece in pumice within a pumice pan. Heat the assembly until the solder flows, then allow it to cool completely before handling.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Do not flatten them
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Use medium paste solder to butter the side of the bail
Step 30
Pickle the pendants to remove oxidation, then neutralize them in a baking soda and water solution if using Sparex or a similar pickle.

Rinse thoroughly and dry before moving on.
Step 31
Use files and sanding and polishing pads to clean and refine the edges of the pendant.
Step 32
Tumble the pendant for several hours to bring up a nice shine.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Tumble the pendant for several hours
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, To bring up a nice shine
Step 33
To highlight the embellishments without darkening the inside of bezels-especially for translucent stones like white or pink druzies-fill each bezel interior with Fun-Tak (poster putty) before applying patina.

Apply your chosen patina to the pendant, then remove the putty afterward. If the putty becomes contaminated with chemicals, discard it rather than reusing it.

The bezel interiors should remain clean, requiring little to no touch-up. Once the patina is set, remove it from raised areas to create a soft satin finish.

Finally, tumble the pieces for 20-30 minutes to restore shine without stripping the patina.
Judy Larson's Combine Druzy With Straw and Water Cast Components - , Wire Jewelry Design, Filing, Finishing, Butane Torch, Soldering, Solder, Design, Apply patina to highlight the embellishments
Step 34
Set the stones, making sure the white triangle druzy sits low enough in its bezel and is not raised above the edge.

To accommodate the stone's shape, the bezel edge was carefully bent over, resulting in a slightly uneven surface.

The top of the bezel was then lightly sanded to smooth out any bumps and improve the final appearance.
