Construct these beautiful chainmaille components using three sizes of jumpring to create a range of striking jewelry.

They can be used individually to make pendant bails or earring connectors or linked together to create beautiful bracelets. Jumpring sizes can be adapted to suit your preference.

Step 1

Jump Ring Count for Each Connector

4 small rings - 3mm ID

24 medium rings - 4mm ID

1 large ring - 7mm ID

NOTE: It's also a good idea to have a few extra 3mm or 4mm rings on hand, since you'll use them to connect the pieces together.

Step 2

Close the large jumpring fully and open up 8 medium jumprings.

Step 3

Attach 8 of the medium rings to the large jumpring.

Step 4

Divide each of the medium jumprings into pairs, by attaching another medium jumpring through them

Step 5

Add on another medium jumpring through these two jumprings attached to the large ring, to double up.

Step 6

Do this on each of the pairs, so that the large ring has four sets of two by twos attached.

Step 7

Take one of the sets and create a Byzantine weave with them by folding one of the last rings towards you and the other ring behind.

Step 8

Separate out the rings (attached to the large ring) to expose the rings that you have flipped forward and back.

Step 9

Position another medium ring through the space in the centre of these rings to lock in place.

Add another medium ring through next to it, to double up the Byzantine knot.

Repeat this on the next section of two-on-two medium jumprings attached to the large ring and flip open this set.

Step 12

Separate out the rings to expose the flipped rings.

Step 13

Attach another two medium jumprings through this set to make another Byzantine section.

Step 14

Work your way around the sections, positioning the jumprings to create a Byzantine weave on each.

Step 15

You should now have four Byzantine segments attached to the large ring in the centre.

Step 16

Open up 4 small jumprings.

Step 17

Use a small ring to capture two rings from one Byzantine section and two rings from the Byzantine section next to it.

Capture 4 medium jumprings with the small ring, to bring half of one section and half of another together.

Link the remaining two jumprings of this Byzantine section with the next two, to join them together

The small jumpring should capture the four medium jumprings highlighted.

Bringing these four rings together with the small jumpring (two from one segment and two from the segment next to it) will create a point

Capture the last four remaining jumprings with the small jumpring.

I'm Natalie Patten, I'm from Liverpool in the UK. I first discovered my love of wire work during lockdown and this hobby quickly spiralled into a huge passion and obsession, for wire wrapping crystal gemstones. So much so, that I changed my career working in education, to become a jewellery designer and set up my business Rock, Scissors, Paper specialising in wire wrapped, ethically sourced gemstone jewellery. I also secured my dream job designing and teaching for the UK's largest supplier of beads for jewellery making!
