Permanent Marker - the Tool You Love to Hate

by Linda Gale
Almost everyone has a permanent marker in their tool box. Useful for innumerable marking jobs in everyday life, many people don't know how helpful they can be for wire wrappers. You can use a tiny dot to mark a length of wire, to show where to start and end a weave, and to determine the height and size of a bezel. We recommend using the 'Ultra Fine Point' marker for all these tasks.
Permanent Markers: A Wirewrapper's Love-Hate Tool

Markers are handy for drawing patterns, outlining gemstones, or signing pieces on the back.

Uses are endless. So are the frustrations.

They stain fingers, clothes, furniture, and now wire too.

The ink uses solvent, glyceride, pyrrolidone, resin, and colorant for water resistance. Volatile compounds evaporate to dry it.

Markers stay put in many colors and tip sizes. Downside: lingering odor.

Fixes exist for most marks. Scented versions help with smell.
How to Remove Permanent Marker from Almost Anything!
First and foremost, marker on wire can be removed with rubbing alcohol.

When you get it on your hands, use alcohol-based products (rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, hand sanitizer) or scrub skin with olive oil, baking soda or salt.

Removing Permanent Marker Stains (Even from Wire!)

Apply a small amount of cleaning solution to the mark. Blot gently with a clean white cloth, don't rub.

Continue until the stain lifts. Rinse thoroughly, then wash as usual.

Check for leftover stain before drying. Heat can set it permanently.

Inspect on a damp surface. Re-treat if needed.
