Permanent Marker - the Tool You Love to Hate
by Linda Gale
Almost everyone has a permanent marker in their tool box. Useful for innumerable marking jobs in everyday life, many people don't know how helpful they can be for wire wrappers. You can use a tiny dot to mark a length of wire, to show where to start and end a weave, and to determine the height and size of a bezel. We recommend using the 'Ultra Fine Point' marker for all these tasks.
Markers are useful for drawing patterns, outlining a gemstone...even signing your name and the date you created the piece (on the back, of course). The uses are endless for permanent markers.... And so, unfortunately, are the possible frustrations!

Everyone in the civilized world has been frustrated at how to remove permanent marks from everything - including, but not limited to - fingers, clothing, furniture, walls, carpet, wood ... and even the occasional unlucky pet.

Wirewrappers can add 'wire' to that list.

What is it that makes this 'kisses and curses' ink so permanent?

According to Wikipedia: "In general, the ink comprises a main carrier solvent, a glyceride, a pyrrolidone, a resin and a colorant, making it water resistant. Like spray paint, these markers contain volatile organic compounds which evaporate to dry the ink."

Suffice it to say that permanent markers are...permanent. They come in many colors - some colors a bit more difficult to remove than others. Their many shapes and sizes can be extremely useful. And we'd all enjoy them more if they didn't have such a distinct, unpleasant odor that takes such a long time to disperse!

Fortunately, there's a 'fix' for almost everything - 'permanent' marks included - though the odor problem will, unhappily, remain...unless you opt for a 'scented' marker.
How to Remove Permanent Marker from Almost Anything!
First and foremost, marker on wire can be removed with rubbing alcohol. When you get it on your hands, use alcohol-based products (rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, hand sanitizer) or scrub skin with olive oil, baking soda or salt.

As with all 'cleanups' of dastardly stains, you should use the typical instructions provided for clothes, carpet, etc. This usually means that you apply a small amount of the 'miracle' solution onto the mark, then blot, not rub, with a clean white cloth, to remove the stain. Continue this process until the stain is gone.

I always rinse the stained item very well, then follow up with by washing as normal. But - before you put the item into the dryer, be sure the stain is completely gone. Sometimes they can be seen more easily on a 'clean', damp background. Re-treat to be sure all the mark is gone.

As with everything, there may be more than one solution for your particular permanent marker stain. Google for 'removing permanent marker from _______' and you should find answers to specific questions.
