Creating a satin finish with a texturing wheel

by Kylie Jones
A texturing wheel is used in a rotary tool or flex shaft to create a satin finish. This satin finish might also be called a frosted, evenly scratched, or semi-matte finish. This finish still reflects light but in a very different way from a polished surface.
Why would you want to finish a piece of jewelry with a scratched surface? Even a highly polished surface has tiny, very uniform scratches.

The key to a uniform metal finish is that the surface reflects light evenly and looks consistent throughout.

A frosted finish is uniform and reflects light diffusely rather than like a mirror.

This makes it desirable if you want a long-lasting, even finish that requires little maintenance.

Mirror finishes reveal imperfections like small scratches from everyday wear. These scratches need to be polished away regularly.

Many customers prefer jewelry that doesn't require a lot of time or effort to maintain.
A frosted finish can also add contrast in a design to create more visual interest.

On round wire, the frosted finish isn't as obvious as on a flat surface.

However, as shown in the photos, it still provides a subtle point of difference.

This effect can be useful for enhancing the appeal of your designs.

If you photograph your designs, a mirror finish can be frustrating, especially on convex surfaces that reflect objects from all angles.

A satin finish is much easier to photograph because it doesn't reflect clearly defined objects. Even the black from your camera appears muted.

In the photo of the three rings, the left ring reflects the camera, surroundings, and me.

On the two frosted rings, the finish stands out more than the reflections.
The top wire has a frosted surface.

The difference with wire is not as obvious as flat metal but it still offers a point of difference in a design.

The texturing wheel is easy to use and comes mounted on a mandrel, ready to fit into your handpiece.

These wheels act like a bushy scrubbing brush and don't dig into the metal or create deep scratches, so there's no risk of gouging your designs.

If you don't like the finish, you can easily remove it by lightly sanding it back.

If you don't have a rotary tool or flex shaft, you can achieve a frosted finish with sandpaper, polishing papers, or polishing pads.

Polishing paper is a better choice than sandpaper for a more even surface.
You can vary the texture of the finish by changing the direction of the brush. Short strokes across the surface create a more frosted finish whereas long fluid strokes create a less obviously scratched or frosted surface.
