Color Inspiration - Stacked Seashells

Stacking oyster shells to look for the spaces in between was my self assignment this past spring. I acquired these beautiful shells of different colors, coasts, and varieties from my local fish monger.

My fishmonger seeks out people interested in repurposing shells for chicken feed, gardening, jewelry, arts, and crafts.

It took time to balance the shells on each other, exploring light, shadows, and how different shapes merge.

I wanted to create an organic look that highlights the unique structure of each oyster.

The necklace aims to capture the same lightness and natural elegance.

This necklace is made with hemp string and mother-of-pearl (MOP) buttons.

MOP, also called nacre, is cut from the lining of oysters and is the same material that coats pearls.

Nacre is strong and resilient.

Buttons made from MOP are long-lasting and have a distinctive iridescence.

MOP has been used since the Ming dynasty for jewelry and decorative arts.

Its color palette of whites, grays, iron, and charcoal complements the hemp string.

Simple overhand knots add an airy feel to the design.

The shimmer of the buttons gives the neckline a casual chic look.
