August Birthstone - Peridot and Sardonyx

by Judy Ellis
It's starting to feel a bit like Fall is peaking around the corner, and even though I'm not ready to give up on my beach time, sunshine and B-B-Q's yet, today I thought we would look ahead to our August Birthstones - Peridot and Sardonyx.

They are both beautiful gemstones that remind me of the Summer colors moving into Fall!
Peridot:

Peridot holds magical powers for protection against nightmares.

Brings power, influence, and good fortune to wearers year-round.

Formed deep in Earth, surfaced by volcanoes, linking to nature's forces.

In Hawaii, symbolizes Pele's tears, goddess of fire and volcanoes.

Additional sources include China, Myanmar, and Pakistan.

Occurs only in olive green, varying by iron content from yellow-green to brownish-green.

Prized variety shows deep, dark olive-green hue.

Smaller stones suit beaded necklaces and bracelets.

Sardonyx:

Sardonyx is a variety of onyx, easily recognized by its layers of reddish-brown and white bands.

It was highly valued by the ancient Greeks and Romans, who carried sardonyx talismans engraved with images of heroes like Mars or Hercules.

They believed these stones would bring courage and victory in battle.

Because of its striking banding, sardonyx has long been used to create cameos (carved raised figures) and intaglios (their reverse engravings).

This gemstone appears worldwide, with finest from India.

Also mined in Czechoslovakia, Brazil, Uruguay, Germany, United States.

Sard and sardonyx used across jewelry eras, popular in Victorian fobs and cameos.

Perthshire supplied material; Scottish revival under Queen Victoria featured them.

Carved stone hearts since Victorian times showcase sardonyx or carnelian onyx layered warmth.
