A Short History of Charms and Charm Bracelets

by Judy Larson
Judy Larson takes a quick look back at the long history of charms and charm bracelets. From ancient cultures that used charms for protection and luck to modern designs with personal meaning, these small pieces have always told a story.

This feature connects the past to today with a fresh jewelry interpretation inspired by history!
The origins of charms can be traced back to ancient civilizations. People in the Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian empires believed charms served as protective amulets that could bring good luck or ward off evil. Egyptians buried charms with their dead to aid the journey into the afterlife, and jewelry featuring scarabs or images of the winged goddess Isis was commonly worn for protection in everyday life. These symbolic motifs continue to inspire modern jewelry designs, such as contemporary charm bracelets.

In addition to their protective qualities, charms also became visible symbols of social status in ancient Rome, particularly when crafted from precious metals. Much like today, each charm carried a personal history, meaning, or story. The piece below offers a modern interpretation of how scarab-inspired charms can be incorporated into jewelry design.

For centuries, charms were primarily regarded as protective amulets. That changed during the Victorian Era (1837-1901), when Queen Victoria popularized charm jewelry by wearing a bracelet adorned with heart-shaped locket charms gifted to her by her husband, Prince Albert, following the birth of each of their nine children. With that simple yet meaningful gesture, the charm bracelet trend was born. Charms evolved from symbols of protection into cherished keepsakes that commemorated important milestones, memories, and personal experiences in the wearer's life.

Following World War II, many soldiers purchased small souvenir charms as gifts for family members while making their journey home. These meaningful keepsakes were often added to bracelets or necklaces and proudly worn by their recipients. Each charm carried a story, serving as a tangible reminder of a father, uncle, brother, son, or grandson who had served and returned home. In my own family, my father purchased a bracelet in Paris for his mother on his way home at the end of the war, creating a treasured memento of both his travels and his safe return.

Years later, I was lucky enough to be a chaperone on a student trip to Paris where I purchased my version of that bracelet.

The WWII tradition of bringing home souvenir charms helped make charm bracelets a popular and personal gift. Charms were sold everywhere, especially in tourist destinations. For my thirteenth birthday, my parents gave me a charm bracelet with a disc charm engraved with my name. They also told my friends, who were planning a surprise party, and together they purchased several more charms, including a Happy Birthday charm dated 1963.

Over the years, I added charms from my travels and others that held special meaning. The last charm added to that bracelet was a snowflake dated 2003. Since then, each of my charm bracelets has included a dated beginning and ending charm.

Although charm bracelets faded from mainstream fashion by the 1970s, they never truly disappeared. I continued buying and making charms, eventually filling three bracelets and starting a fourth. They are wonderful conversation starters, and people often ask about the stories behind the charms I wear.

Driven by nostalgia and a desire for self-expression, charm jewelry experienced a resurgence in the early 2000s with the introduction of Pandora-style charms. These large-hole sterling silver beads, often featuring attached charms, were designed to slide onto snake chain bracelets, allowing wearers to create highly personalized pieces.

The concept quickly caught on, and many jewelry designers introduced their own versions, proving that charm jewelry was more than a passing trend. Glass artists joined the movement as well, creating coordinating bead collections that expanded the creative possibilities. These larger-hole beads also offered versatility, making it easy to wear a single special bead on a chain as a pendant or combine multiple beads on a bracelet to tell a personal story.

Charms in any shape or form still hold a place in jewelry, commemorating historical events and life's milestones. At the end of 2020, covid virus slide "charm beads" and a covid mask charms came off my workbench for my grandchildren.

For my 75th birthday, I gave myself a very special gift: a collection of beads commemorating meaningful moments from each of the twelve months of my life, along with a central birthday bead. Today, the trend is to wear just one, two, or three special beads at a time rather than a fully loaded bracelet. But jewelry trends, like fashion, are cyclical. Styles may be updated and reimagined, yet there is always something special about wearing an original piece. The stories, memories, and history it carries never go out of style.

When our children were young, we began a Christmas tradition of having them choose a gold charm for each grandmother. The first charm was presented on a necklace charm holder, and each year a new charm was added. Over time, the collection became a treasured record of the children's interests, personalities, and thoughtful.

After the grandmothers passed away, many of the charms were gathered onto bracelets along with a few gold pendants from their jewelry boxes. What began as a simple holiday tradition became a cherished family heirloom, preserving both memories and the love behind each carefully chosen charm.

Today's charm bracelets are not so different from those of the past. While current trends may be influenced by pop culture, celebrities, and social media, charm bracelets remain a way to express personality and tell a personal story. Jewelry designers and luxury brands have embraced the trend, adding modern interpretations to this age-old form of self-expression. Many contemporary designs are more minimalist than their predecessors, but the focus remains the same-the stories behind the charms.

Will charm bracelets remain relevant in the future? Quite possibly. As technology continues to evolve, charms may evolve with it. Imagine charms incorporating QR codes or NFC chips that allow wearers to access photos, videos, or stories connected to a special memory with a simple scan.

The changes I have witnessed during my lifetime have been remarkable. I grew up in an era of crank telephones, party lines, radio dramas, and no television. Technology has advanced at an astonishing pace, making it exciting to imagine what innovations the future may bring.

One thing seems certain: designers will continue to reinvent nostalgic favorites. In the nearly two centuries since Queen Victoria popularized charm bracelets, they have never truly gone out of style. They simply adapt to the times. More than decorative accessories, charm bracelets are wearable collections of memories-a story told one charm at a time. What story will yours tell?
