Eva Sherman

Eva Sherman is thrilled to come back to Tucson to teach her amazing wire and sheet classes this year. She’s been coming to the Tucson gem shows for 6 years now, and as she says, "it is THE place for checking out new beads, findings, and tools, as well as making new friends!"

I’m sure I’m not the only wire wrapper who takes a look at jewelry made from metal sheet and thinks, "There’s no way I could do that!" Whether you think it’ll add a lot of tools and mess up your whole work area, or you’re just not sure where to start, I promise that working with sheet is a lot more like making wire jewelry than you think.

Besides, you don’t need to have a torch to start making jewelry with sheet, although you can down the road: some sheet cutters and a file or steel wool to finish the edges are the only other tools you really need to get started. Like Eva says, "Sheet is just wide wire and has the same characteristics." You’ll learn a lot of sheet tips in class with Eva!

Over the years, I’ve discovered that if you learn to work with the characteristics of wire instead of fighting them, your work will become fluid, and you will be much less frustrated. -Eva Sherman

Eva says that having such a solid foundation in wire techniques and knowledge is what helped her transition to using sheet in her work. While she took several classes on fold-forming, which is a way of creating texture in sheet metal pieces, she’s really taken off on her own, experimenting with tools and effects to get her own signature look. And you can, too!

When I asked Eva why she loves sharing how to make jewelry with students, she said, "I love the creative interaction, the joy in accomplishing something previously impossible, but most of all, I love that students are always so happy to be there!”

And when I asked her what the 1 thing is she has to have when she’s making jewelry, Eva said, "Magnification :-)" After discovering more about Eva’s metal jewelry, I really think that the gap between sheet metal and wire wrapping is just a very small step! How about you?

We are lucky have Eva Sherman as one of the returning JewelryTools.com instructors this year in Tucson, Feb. 1-12, at booth #N1 at the JOGS Show in Tucson, Arizona!

Hi Susan, you can find metal sheet on many jewelry supply store online. We don’t carry it on Wire-Sculpture now, but here are 2 I recommend: JewelryTools Metal and WiredupBeads metal sheet (more selection)

I was a little disappointed to see the classes at the Jogs Show this year. Without credentials I can’t even go in there. It was exciting to meet everyone last year when they were at Kino which is open to everyone. Tucson is my winter home and I look forward to attending the shows every year that I can get into, which means retail, as I don’t have a license or credentials and don’t plan on getting one. I wish all venues were both wholesale and retail so more people can see what is offered there as well. Good Luck at the Jogs Show to all the teachers.

Hi Beverly, I wish Tucson was my winter home, you are so fortunate!

Guess what – you don’t need credentials to go to JOGS if you’re taking a class! We’ve got a plan with the show organizer and we will be making sure everyone gets into the JOGS show for their classes. So if there’s a class you like, please don’t let that be the reason you don’t take it.

Give us a call at 1-877-636-0608 if you have any more questions, and make sure to tell them that Rose personally told you to call on the blog.
      Hope to see you there!

Is this like a vendors show where we can just look and maybe buy products that are for sale?I want to go to the next show in 2014.We live a long ways away and we may want to drive down there for a winter break and I definitely want to go to the JOGS show if it is open to the public.

      Hi Heidi,
We’d be glad to have you next year! The JOGS Show (you can read more about it by clicking here) is not open to the public. You must apply to gain access, and you can register as a wholesale buyer or as a visitor. If you are a wholesale buyer, you can attend the Champagne Brunch :) Or, if you register for a class, you can bypass all the paperwork and we’ll make sure you get in :)

JOGS is also a hub for the free shuttles for the gem shows, so you can start your day at JOGS and then go exploring without worrying about parking or directions!

If you’re staying more than a few days, I highly recommend scouting out a house to rent. It’s a popular thing to do, rent out houses for several weeks to a month or longer during the gem show “season” in Tucson. This would help you feel at home without worrying about crowded motels, and you can even use a kitchen for meals.

Hope to see you down there! You’ll love it!
      Rose
