Question:

Dale, I have been seeing a wire that I’m having a hard time finding; it looks like twisted wire, but it is not. It appears like a rope design wire in 22-gauge round gold filled. On your website, you show an item you have made using this type of wire. What is this type of wire, and where can I find it?

-Curtis in Los Angeles, California

Answer:

Hi Curtis, as you did not mention the name of the design, I looked through my gallery, and I think you may mean the arms in “Little Girl Dancing“? If so, those are made by twisting two 24-gauge square wires together. A “rope” design can also be made by twisting one piece of square wire and then twisting a piece of round wire around the twisted square as seen in the article Getting Twisted (scroll down to the last picture). The smaller the wire and the tighter the twist will give you a really nice “rope” design.

Dale, I’m wondering if the question is about twisted round wire? That gives a beautiful appearance of roping. And it can be done by the individual; it does not have to be ordered.

The “rope” looking wire was a joy to understand after a class with Dale when I wanted to make a nice v-shaped collar. It was one of those “DUH” moments for me simply because I just didn’t really think it through.
