Question:

What exactly is a “trunk show”?

-Suzanne in Gobles, Michigan

Answer:

With reference to us, as handcrafted jewelry artists, a “trunk show” is a traveling collection of our work.

A trunk show is often held at a retail location where the storeowner offers the opportunity to their customers to shop exclusively from the collection, and takes a percentage of the sales in exchange for the opportunity to present your collection in new venues. In this case, the “showing” does not need to be formal (meaning entirely on professional displays) but rather can be displayed in the cases the collection travels in.

Sometimes the items offered are one-of-kind and only orders are taken, while other times things are sold on the spot. A Private Showing or Home Show can also be referred to as a Trunk Show.

Thank you. You explain it so well and now I have a couple of new ideas to try. I was so disappointed recently when a local large art/craft show limited entries of jewelry vendors to no more than 15% of total entries. Good for the jewelry vendors who got in, but makes us realize that we have a LOT of competition. We not only have to use our imagination to create our “wares” but also in finding “where” to sell them!

Suzanne, that sounds like a good show promoter! See what you have to do to get in for next year.
