Question:

Many years ago while in the Army, I made cab rings using silver soldered techniques. Is it possible to solder gold filled wire forms?

-Bernard in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania

Answer:

Actually, traditional wire jewelry artists do not use solder or glue. However I did some research for you and found that most folks say soldering gold-filled is rather tricky unless you use solder-filled gold-filled. Although we do carry some soldering supplies, we do not carry this kind of solder due to the nature of wire jewelry design. Good luck!

When giving my mother her Mothers Day present, she commented that she couldn’t even see where the piece was soldered. When I told her there was no solder, she was really impressed. My friends are always amazed that there is NO solder used in my wire jewelry.

I have never done this before, but am very frustrated. I have watched many soldering or torching video’s and read up on torching. I saw plenty of talk about tiny little pieces of silver for attaching metals together. I looked into many stores and companies and cannot find anything on these tiny pieces of silver. Please, where do I go to purchase silver soldering pieces for sterling, copper, etc.

    Please advise,
    temporarily confused!

Hi Suzy, with so many other sites that talk about the wide variety of jewelry making techniques and procedures, Wire-Sculpture is dedicated to traditional wire jewelry design that contains no glue or solder. I apologize for not being able to direct you to ‘the’ one site, video, or manual to answer all of your questions about soldering and the necessary supplies. My advice would be to take a specialized class in jewelry soldering skills.

    hi suzy

dale is right you should take a class and learn soldering from a professional. however, that being said, to use small pieces of solder you simply use your wire cutters to cut small pieces of solder wire from your roll of (solder) wire
