Sterling Silver + Glass Cleaner
by Marilyn Gardiner
Today our tip comes to us from Marilyn Gardiner . She shares with us some home methods for cleaning silver that a student told her about.
Marilyn says:
There are several home methods for cleaning silver (check a previous article I wrote about Jewelry Care), but here’s a new one that a student told me about.
Glass Cleaner! Yes, stand at a sink and spray your piece until it drips. Rub the cleaner into it, and maybe spray a bit again. You will notice that the drips become grayish—indicating that tarnish is being removed.
I tried to take photos to show the before and after. I could see the difference, but I had a problem getting the camera at the same angle for each shot to show the improvement. (I didn’t want to fake it with Photoshop.)
This technique gives you a quick fix if you want to wear a piece of jewelry, but it’s looking dingy. BUT, this will not add a shine to your piece—you need a different method that burnishes the silver to do that.
